Laura
Phox Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh girl, what are you doing there?
You're cutting off all your hair?
Oh girl, what did they do to you?
What did they take from you
That you can never get back?

Laura, Laura
You can grow up

Oh girl, what would you die for?
No, what would you die for?
Oh girl, you're crying out in your room
Wanting to shoot the moon
Because you will never go far

Laura, Laura
You can grow up
You can try and hide away
From all the things that people say

That you need to be OK
But you'll just stay the same

Overall Meaning

The first verse of PHOX’s song “Laura” expresses concern for a woman who is cutting off her hair. The singer seems to know the woman and exclaims, “what are you doing there?” Perhaps the hair-cutting represents a dramatic change in her life or a desire to distance herself from something. The singer then asks “what did they do to you?”, indicating some form of abuse or trauma suffered by the woman. This trauma has caused her to lose something irreplaceable, “What did they take from you that you can never get back?”

The chorus to the song is a call to action for Laura to grow up. This seems targeted towards her trauma or the emotional distress she is suffering from. The singer is trying to encourage her to face her pain and grow beyond it. The second verse addresses more of the pain Laura is expressing. The question “what would you die for?” is very serious and reveals a woman who is in a lot of emotional pain. Laura is crying out in her room and seems to feel like there is no hope for her. She wants to “shoot the moon” and do something drastic, but doesn’t feel like it will make a difference.

I agree that this song's loveliness out-stretches its popularity. A song this beauteous should get more, and I think it will...soon.

No one can tell me this song isn't about Laura Hollis. This song is definitely about Laura Hollis. Also it tears through my soul in a way I've never felt before.
