Its original lineup was John Lydon (vocals) (formerly of the Sex Pistols), Keith Levene (guitar) and Jah Wobble (bass), although by 1983, the band’s lineup would become a fluctuating one, revolving around Lydon. PiL are often cited as one of the most challenging and innovative bands of the post-punk period; John Lydon is quoted as saying he wanted to form an anti-rock band. They were influenced by a wide range of artists, especially esoteric artists like Can, Captain Beefheart, Tim Buckley & various dub artists.

As the years progressed, the PiL line-up would change, adding renowned drummer Martin Atkins in 1979 as the direction of the band evolved. Compared to their first three albums, the later 1980’s/early 1990’s period saw a more conventional sound to the musical aspect, but still retaining Lydon’s biting lyrics. The album Compact Disc (aka Album or Cassette, depending on what format you have it on), recorded by Lydon with a slate of studio musicians organized by producer Bill Laswell, is considered the artistic highpoint of this period of PiL’s evolution. PiL reached their commercial zenith with their aptly titled ninth album, 9, during 1989/1990.

PiL kept going as a Lydon project until 1993, when Lydon disbanded the group. Their final lineup consisted of Lydon, Ted Chau (guitar, keyboards), Mike Joyce of The Smiths (drums), John McGeoch of Magazine and Siouxsie and the Banshees (guitar), and Russel Webb (bass).

Overall Meaning

PiL's song Seattle captures the feelings of displacement and discontent in a new environment. The first stanza introduces the singer's negative opinion of the town, stating that character is lost and found in unfamiliar playing grounds. The singer then commands someone to get out of their world and asks what in the world is happening. The second stanza paints a picture of someone feeling confined and controlled in their new environment, with their mind and body bound and gagged on this new playing ground. The singer highlights the ignorance of the ordinary and their tendency to explain away anything outside their comprehension. The chorus repeats, the singer demanding that they get out of their world.

The third stanza describes secret signs and knowing looks, something reserved only for those familiar with the area. The singer speaks of the happy acceptance of misery life can bring and does not like the look of this new town. The song ends by repeating the chorus and adding chants of "palaces, barricades, threats, and promises."

Every single song on this album is excellent. It’s one of those where you don’t skip any. My ex-husband introduced me to P.I.L. when we first met in 1990. We got married in 1991 and divorced in 2018. Listening to this always takes me back to that first summer, walking to each other’s houses, just driving around listening to music, happy to be together.

I filed when I finally figured it out. I had cancer in 2001. I’d rather have gone thru that again. I’m much better now, lol. Time’s finally working. 🙏🏻

I hated the age difference, didn't want people to think I was that kind of guy (I'm nearer in age of her parents, 11 years) but we really fell in love and I told her she shouldn’t because I was going to die way before her. She gave me the best answer « I could get hit by a car any day. Who says you'll die first? »... The was the most brillant answer I ever heard and there is not a day I regret my choice! We still listen to P.I.L. and I really hope that our story will never end like yours. I know I will never do that to her. Loyalty is too important to me (in love and in friendship). I'm really sorry that your story ended up like that, I hope you're doing well and I'm sending you a big hug. Your story touched me!

Saw PiL with New Order in 88 at Poplar Creek amphitheater outside of Chicago. Lots of people in the crowd had NO IDEA who PiL were...boy were they in for a wonderful surprise! They ruled that show, Jonny is the consummate frontman

Saw Johnny front row at the Beacon on the Happy tour. I didn't know what to expect. He blew me away. Incredibly professional and despite the bad cold he said he was suffering from, swigging large bottles of water, sang and performed like it was his best day. Band was tight and in sync. Unforgettable experience and I've seen almost everyone. My date and I could not hear for four hours after the show and just mouthed words to each other.

I think seattle is a great place place to live because it has an amazing vibe and it has such a extraordinary culture. It is different from other cities and is a beautiful place to live, with a mix of modern contemporary architecture and retro stuff too. Gotta love the rain. Seattle just brings such a good feeling to you and it really makes your day. I wish I could live there but I'm about 20 minutes away.

Agreed punks from my gen born 87 to 97 were posers. Im the only one who didnt wear the uniform unless i stole a cool jacket or vest snd i only had a mohawk on occasion only stole the color had frkends cut the hair and used super glue in it. It might make more sense to know that it's only titled Seattle because they happened to be in that City when they wrote it but the whole album is a theme of military versus revolution versus wealth versus struggle etc.
