The lyrics to Picaflor de los Andes's song "Yo Soy Huancaino" are an ode to the pride of being from the Huancayo region in Peru. The singer is declaring their identity as a Huancaino, and inviting their friends to know them well. They boast of their prized possessions, a well-trained horse and their Lampa (a type of traditional Peruvian blanket) which fill them with pride as a Huancaino. The singer identifies as the son of a handsome Huancaino, and they encourage others to learn about their heritage.
The second half of the song describes the typical attire of a Huancaino; with their sombrero at the ready, they carry their poncho with style. The song then takes a warning tone, suggesting that when a Huancaino drinks, it's best not to offend them. However, the singer also extends an invitation for others to join in the celebration with beer and good cheer, as long as they behave as friends. They encourage their friends not to fear them, for as long as they are treated with loyalty and respect, their heart will always feel it.
Overall, "Yo Soy Huancaino" is a celebration of identity and the proud culture of the Huancayo region in Peru. It showcases the traditional dress and values of the area, while also warning against offending someone's sense of pride. It encourages friendships and camaraderie, but only under the condition of mutual respect and understanding.
