Truly....my best friends sister just had her first baby, and developed some kind of infection in the 24hrs postpartum.. probably from you know tearing herself to bring a baby into the world lmao. It really was an intense reminder of how many women died just from continuing our species before we had antibiotics and other medical care access nowadays.

I was an exchange student, & I lived in Hamelin. They believe this is fact. They do have a it of touristy over the story. This city does have many very old buildings. Including the city hall that's in the story. The cave is really there. A friend of mine lived near it. It's a beautiful city, & if you get the opportunity, you should go.

I just heard the story for the first time today, in a documentary about the Slender Man stabbing. (I was aware a "pied piper" was something, and I knew the expression, "time to pay the piper," but I had never heard the story.) I like it a lot. It is a highly eerie tale, and the fact it is so old only makes it better.

If you are interested in the middle ages you should read the book "why the bear didn't eat the girl".
The book describes how people in the middle ages knew a lot more than we think. For example the fairy tale of the bearskinner is about PTSD. And the fairytale of the robber bridegroom is about cannibalism and due process, but it is not even a fairy tale but actually a crime report!

As a German, i know all about the Rattenfänger von Hameln.
And as a Bavarian a Mittelfranke, the Bamberg Witch Trials are a HUGE Black Stain in German Bavarian History. As a Child we learned about this actually in Christian Education in School first and then in History Class in more depth. And our Parents tould that as a frightening good night Story.

The Children's Crusade, in 1212, is only 70 years or so early for the 1384 account that it was '100 years ago' - that's pretty close. Some of the participants, following a recruiting evangelist named Nicholas, came from Germany, though the earliest accounts describe them as not actually children in terms of chronological age. This crusade is identified with the Pied Piper story. In fact, the artwork at 8:26 is of the Children's Crusade, by Gustav Doré.

it’s interesting that in our time the stories told in print and in video, are about the sort of Marvel world of supermen and women - or that of the Magical world. i tend toward the fantasy of magic myself.
i used to be huge on SciFi, but that became a kind of jaded, monotonous world. Startrek was the last of true scifi which was popular. then came Star Wars which was fantasy and scifi. also Ursula K. LeGuin and Dragons of Pern books, which were fantasy i read avidly. Tolkien was written much earlier, but became extremely popular, obviously. so fantasy and magic is the fairytale milieu of today.
when i was a kid, the tales were about the Wild West harkening back to the time of the taming of the American west.
we always seem to need heroes and/or villains to keep us on an even kilter. i mean, look at Godzilla, the monster who became beloved and a hero. jeez, even Dracula became somewhat of a hero (it’s not his fault he became a vamp. and stories of vamps who don’t drink living human blood [“Supernatural]). soooo interesting! :) 🤔🐲🎭

Somewhere i read, that there is/was an old church window, which showed a large person in coloured dress and a number of smaller persons. I read that the window showed the men of the town levy, died in a battle. The man shown larger was the leader/ Hauptmann, but many years later the story was no more known and the tale appeared. Can be possible, because i read , that in 17/18 th century a german ,town secretary' wanted to write the history of his town. He did research in old documents, but did not unterstand some medieval incidents, because in three or four centuries, many things have changed.

It tells about several famous highwaymen and robbers in that part of medieval Germany who kidnapped people, including children.
I can only suggest Googling for references to the "real story" of the Pied Piper of Hamelin . It's a pretty grim story.

I am very much alive. Although I remain unpaid for my service, the myth of missing children is not of my doing. Is there a record of the townsfolk performing a search, posting a reward or assembling a posse to find their missing children? The answer is no, there is no such record or even rumor of any attempt to locate the children. Does that sound logical? Perhaps they chose to concoct a cover for the loss of their children at their own hands, that is if they ever were missing at all. Nevertheless, of all the things they may have lost they should miss their common sense the most. Let it be a spiritual message to all to deal in fairness and honesty. Pay the Piper.

Bamberg's 4-towered cathedral that "loomed over the town"? You can see, especially in vintage postcards, how, where there was a political seat and a religious power in the same town, the church would somehow be TALLER than the political seat, if only by a particularly lengthy spire. I thought the Pied Piper story was to explain the Saxon settlement of Transylvania (in Romania). The Transylvanian Germans lived there until the 1970s-they were actually ransomed by the German Government (Ceaucescue) charged them about $10,000 to release the Germans. The loss of these people caused a big economic decline for Romania-many of the farms and towns are now abandoned. Dr. Hermann Oberth (an important German rocket scientist) was a Transylvanian Saxon.The story relates an actual historical action-the King of Hungary invited these saxons to resettle in Transylvania-he knew they could farm and make his kingdom wealthy.

There's a difference between "Absolute History" & infotainment. It would be nice to have terms of language adhered to, not manipulated.

A parallel to early Rome..preistesses( witches) offered the entire history of Romes future offered the books to the romans...they said no, one of the books was burned...I think they burned another, til the city fathers came to their senses...and the Emperor Claudius read the book...and knew his own fate..( poisoned by his wife)

Ergotism was a known thing back then, symptoms would be recognized and there were treatments for it. The idea of ergotism causing mass hysteria has been debunked by academics.

@Andrea Kies Ergotism causing dancing plagues has been debunked. Plain mass hysteria, a form of stress relief, or maybe the people were just vibing. There were actually no deaths from it in records from the time.

I figure if it's not the typical mass hysteria, then it was an exercise in a similar manner to the Sufi Dhikr circle dancing in the Caucusus where dancers are put into a trance state with the dancing, singing, and religious chanting (can be done for a long period of time, even hours).

The role myths and legends play in establishing rules of society, and punishment for those breaking them..... not just the Pied Piper. Unfortunate the video title did not reflect the description. The narrator also does Murder Maps.

Well, to start off, this is obviously mistitled, but beyond that--though each segment is well-presented and each segment holds together in itself--the various segments do not hold together with each other and not all of them support the proposed central thesis.

If I was just talking with these people, it would be interesting & enjoyable, but that's a far cry from a successful essay, presentation, documentary & the like.
