“I wanted to approach song writing differently. Like a rapper, I wanted to use the beat as my point of departure and then continue by collaging different layers."
-Pien Feith
This shift in her approach to writing allowed the multifaceted singer to employ a wider range of influences in her music. Together with her partner and producer Melvin Wevers she wrote and recorded numerous demos over the course of two years. These tracks were then dissected, cut up, and augmented by drummer and percussionist Pim Verlaek.
Dance on Time is a beat-oriented record that flirts with dub, crunk, and tropicalia. The stream of enticing new songs that emerged daily from the crevices of the Internet have manifested themselves on this record. By working with studio engineer Remko Schouten, who has worked with Pavement and ZzZ, the band managed to translate the digital sketches into a more organic sound. The last addition to the band has been bass player Peter Akkerman, who completes the band’s live sound.
Pien describes the period during which she wrote the record as one “without a clear idea of the future, something I have gradually started to see less as a problem. This relief of tension guided my in approach music in a new found fashion. I try to look for growth instead of defining a clear start and end.”
Dirty Laundry

I want the ground to shake under my feet
I want us to move constantly
and moving only for the sake of moving
Oh, I wanted to see behind every door
I wanted to see like I never did before
but I found myself walking hallways
dirty laundry for the world
dirty laundry for the world to see
I want things to change constantly
I want the ground to shake under my feet
Oh, I want us to move constantly
and moving only for the sake of moving
moving only for the sake of moving
moving only for the sake of moving
dirty laundry for the world
my dirty laundry for the world to see
In Pien Feith's song Dirty Laundry, the artist expresses her desire for constant change and movement. She wants to feel the ground shake under her feet and keep moving without any particular direction or purpose. This is evident in her repetition of the phrase "moving only for the sake of moving".
Feith also mentions her curiosity and desire to explore, wanting to see behind every door and see things in a new light. However, she finds herself stuck walking hallways and wanting to escape. The metaphor of dirty laundry represents the parts of herself that she may not want the world to see, but is willing to reveal to the world nonetheless.
The lyrics overall convey a feeling of restlessness and a search for something more. The desire for change and movement comes from a need to grow and evolve, but it also reveals a sense of dissatisfaction with the current state of things. The artist seems to be calling for something more meaningful and authentic in life, even if it means exposing some of the darker or messier parts of oneself to the world.
