Che gelida manina
Piero Mazzocchetti Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Che gelida manina,
Se la lasci riscaldar.
Cercar che giova ?
Al buio non si trova.
Ma per fortuna
E una notte di luna,
E qui la luna
L'abbiamo vicina.
Aspetti, signorina,
Le dirò con due parole
Chi son, chi son, e che faccio, come vivo. Vuole?
Chi son, chi son? Sono un poeta.
Che cosa faccio? Scrivo.
E come vivo? Vivo.
In poverata mia lieta
Scialo da gran signore
Rime ed inni d'amore.
Per sogni e per chimere
E per castelli in aria,
L'anima ho millionaria.
Talor dal mio forziere
Ruban tutti i gioelli
Due ladri, gli occhi belli.
V'entrar con voi pur ora,
Ed i miei soni usati
E i bei sogni miei,
Tosto si dileguar!
Ma il furto non m'accora
Poiche, poiche v'ha preso stanza
La speranza!
Or che mi conoscete,
Parlate voi, deh! Parlate. Chi siete?
Vi piaccia dir!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Piero Mazzocchetti's song Che Gelida Manina, which translates to "What a cold little hand," speak of a man trying to warm up a woman's hand on a cold night. He asks what use it is to search for warmth in the dark and then realizes that they are lucky to have the moon close by that could provide light. He then introduces himself as a poet who writes love poems and lives a happy life in poverty. He spends his time dreaming and imagining castles in the air, which makes his soul feel rich. Even though his dreams and beautiful thoughts may be stolen by thieves, it does not diminish his hope. The man asks the woman to tell him about herself after he introduced himself.

Ma il furto non m'accora
But I'm not upset by the theft,

Poiche, poiche v'ha preso stanza
since, since hope has taken up residence here

La speranza!
