He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

On a largué nos caleçons
On a largué nos caleçons
On a largué nos caleçons
Nos fanfreluches en nylon
Nos frocs en accordéon
Nos sandwiches en saucisson
C'était vraiment du folklore
De voir la tête des croque-morts
Qui pour une fois, sincèrement
Faisaient une gueule d'enterrement
Vous auriez vu mon patron
Et mon avocat marron
Et mon pompiste mormon
La caissière du Gaumont
Le type qui vend du saumon
Et le mec des contributions
The lyrics to Pierre Perret's song "À poil" depict a scene where the singer, while at the bank, notices two older women who are critical of the youth and their long hair. Suddenly, gangsters arrive and order everyone to strip naked. In the chaos, the singer realizes that even the people they thought they knew, such as the bank director, are only interested in money. The group eventually ends up at the hospital, still naked and bewildered. The final verse focuses on a funeral where the mourners also strip down, creating a bizarre and comical scene.
The lyrics are ripe for interpretation and analysis as they touch on issues of conformity, societal expectations, and materialism. The older women who criticize the youth's long hair can be seen as a symbol of generational divides and conservative values. The gangsters who force everyone to strip naked can be seen as a commentary on the loss of agency and the oppressive nature of authority. The funeral scene can be seen as a liberation from societal norms and conventions.
Overall, the lyrics to "À poil" can be read as a critique of the status quo and the institutions that uphold it. The stripping down of the characters in the song is a metaphor for shedding the layers of societal expectations and revealing one's true self.

While withdrawing some cash from the bank the other day

I was checking out a cute little doe
Who had hair all the way down to her thighs
