He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

Enfin te revoilà
Tu es là toute indéci-ise
Laiss' tomber ta vali-ise
Emilia Emilia
Enroul'-toi dans mes bras
On fera des betises
On f'ra n'importe quoi
Emilia Emilia
Enfin te revoilà
Tu es là toute indéci-ise
Laiss' tomber ta vali-ise
Emilia Emilia
Enroul'-toi dans mes bras
On fera des betises
On f'ra n'importe quoi
Tu corrigeais toutes mes maladresses
Tu réfrénais mes excès de vitesse
Emilia Emilia
Enfin te revoilà
Tu es là toute indéci-ise
Laiss' tomber ta vali-ise
Emilia Emilia
Enroul'-toi dans mes bras
On fera des betises
On f'ra n'importe quoi
Emilia Emilia
Enfin te revoilà
Tu es là toute indéci-ise
Laiss' tomber ta vali-ise
Emilia Emilia
Enroul'-toi dans mes bras
On fera des betises
On f'ra n'importe quoi
Emilia Emilia
Je te garde pour moi
On fera des beti-ises
On f'ra n'importe quoi
Emilia Emilia
Enroul'-toi dans mes bras
Tu as payé la factu-ure
Le client était roi
Emilia Emilia
Enfin te revoilà
Tu es là toute indéci-ise
A présent tu es chez toi
Emilia Emilia
Je te garde pour moi
Tu es là toute indécise
Laisse tomber ta valise
The song "Emilia" by Pierre Perret tells the story of a reunion with a woman named Emilia after an absence. The singer urges Emilia to make herself at home, assuring her that they can do whatever they want and get into some mischief. The lyrics describe the items in Emilia's bedroom, including laurels of love, cuddly tamarind trees, campanulas and opal lilies. The room apparently contains everything, from swifts and chains to traps and birdcages.
The song continues with the singer confessing his infatuation with Emilia's purple lips, her breasts and her ability to guide him through his adolescent clumsiness. He elaborates on other personal items found in his own room, including tax forms, a pipe and a bicycle. He notes that Emilia has struggled, as evidenced by the tears in her eyes. However, he asks if she would like to accompany him and be his partner for the remainder of the journey.
