He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.
Je te tue

Une seringue à la main
Disait au coureur :
Je te shoote pour ton bien
Le sponsor veut qu' tu sois
La diva de tous les temps
Mais que tu restes vivant
Jusqu'à la fin du contrat
Toi, l' champion, on te tue
Car les dieux du stade ont faim
Ils se payent ta vertu
Comme on s'offre une putain
Ton épouse et tes enfants
Pleureront sur ton argent
Mais tu seras mort, par chance
En gagnant le tour de France
Un parfait coquin
Pilotait un pétrolier
Avec des marins
Qu'avaient jamais navigué
Sa poubelle pleine de fuel
Éclatée sur un rocher
Se déversait dans la houle
Et le vieux de pleurnicher :
Toi, la mer, je te tue
Avec le bateau crevard
D'un tôlier corrompu
Qui court après les dollars
Je tords le cou à Neptune
Pour engraisser quelques porcs
Pour de misérables tunes
Je m'en vais semer la mort
Un Anglais riait
En vendant sans aucun mal
Les stocks aux Français
De ses farines animales
Il disait : Dans mon job
Je vends du Creutzfeldt-Jakob
Ça pourrait s'additionner
À vot' sang contaminé
Toi, Frenchie, je te tue
Ça rapporte tant d'argent
Nous t'avons bien vendu
Nos poisons pendant huit ans
Serait-ce parce que tu es trop bête
Ou tout aussi malhonnête
Que tu achetais nos saloperies ?
Tu es comme nous, aussi pourri
Les présidents fiers
Dans un bureau se partagent
Le ciel et la Terre
En distingués géophages
Les uns disent en riant :
Si on prend vos OGM
Vous oublierez certainement
Nos usines cancérigènes
Toi, planète, on te tue
The first verse of Pierre Perret’s song Je te tue talks about a nice doctor holding a syringe and telling a runner that he’s going to inject him for his own good. The sponsor wants the runner to become the diva of all times, but also wants him to stay alive until the end of the contract. The chorus talks about the God of the stadium that is hungry and is paying for the runner’s virtue as if he was buying a prostitute. The runner’s wife and child will cry over his money, but he’ll be dead, fortunately, having won the Tour de France.
In the second verse, a perfect rogue drives an oil tanker with sailors that had never navigated before. His garbage can full of fuel exploded on a rock and spilled into the swell. The old man cries. The chorus talks about him killing the sea with a deadbeat boat captain who runs after the dollars, twisting Neptune’s neck to fatten some pigs and sow death for miserable money.
In the last verse, an Englishman laughs while selling animal flour stocks to the French with ease. He says that he sells Creutzfeldt-Jakob in his job, which could add up to their contaminated blood. The chorus talks about France buying their poisons for eight years, earning them a lot of money. The presidents, proud in their offices, share the sky and the earth as distinguished geophages. They joke that if they take their GMOs, they will forget their carcinogenic factories. The chorus ends the song by saying that they are killing the planet because the gods of consumption are formal, there will be no more profit without pollution.
