He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

Au restaurant du tors-boyaux
C'est des frissons plein la peau
Qu'on est r'venus
Moi j'ai pensé
Qu'entre la chaleur de son corps
Et la chaleur de mon corps
Ça pourrait chauffer
Jusque là rien d'anormal
Nul ne le contestera
Le bonheur conjugal
Nous tendait les bras
On s'était dit
Qu'entre ses parents hystériques
Et mes parents alcooliques
Ça pourrait coller
On a pensé
Que sa frangine sortant d'une maison
Et mon p'tit frère de prison
Ça pouvait gazer
Jusque là rien d'anormal
Nul ne le contestera
Le bonheur conjugal
Nous tendait les bras
Je me réjouis
Son parfum d'ail me plut autant
Que la couleur de ses dents
Un peu vert-de-gris
Son teint blafard
Était pour sûr un don des cieux
Ainsi que ses yeux chassieux
Pas besoin de fard
Jusque là rien d'anormal
Nul ne le contestera
Le bonheur conjugal
Nous tendait les bras
Or les copains
Sûrement jaloux que j'ai eu du flair
Ont prétendu que son frère
Me refusait sa main
Mais halte-là
Ne nous laissons point abuser
Y pouvait pas me la refuser
Elle n'en avait pas
Jusque là rien d'anormal
Nul ne le contestera
Le bonheur conjugal
Nous tendait les bras
Comble de joie
Elle avait une jambe de bois
Du côté gauche par bonheur
Moi du côté droit
J'étais joyeux
Sa famille n'avait pas de maison
La mienne couchait sous les ponts
C'était merveilleux
Jusque là rien d'anormal
Nul ne le contestera
Le bonheur conjugal
Nous tendait les bras
Seulement voilà
Elle faisait des fautes de français
Personnellement ça me gênait
J'ai le certificat
Pour comble un jour
Dans une conversation d'amour
Elle me sortit tout de go
J'aime les z'haricots
Jusque là rien d'anormal
Nul ne le contestera
Le bonheur conjugal
Nous tendait les bras
C'était vraiment pas normal
Nul ne le contestera
Et ce trou cérébral
Venait me couper les bras
J'ai rompu mes fiançailles
Mais le remords me tenaille
Car pour moi l'idéal
C'est le bonheur conjugal
The song Le bonheur conjugal by Pierre Perret is a humorous take on the concept of marital bliss. The lyrics describe the singer's experience of falling in love with a woman whom he met at a restaurant. He is initially drawn to her physical attributes and believes that they are well-suited for each other despite their respective family problems. However, his illusions are shattered when he realizes that she has a wooden leg and makes grammatical errors in French. Despite breaking off their engagement, he still longs for the idea of marital happiness.
The lyrics of the song are presented in a lighthearted and comical tone, as the singer pokes fun at his own naive and misguided idea of love. The verses are structured in a way that highlights the absurdity of the singer's reasoning, as he focuses on superficial qualities rather than deeper emotional connections. The chorus is repetitive and emphasizes the elusive nature of happiness, which the singer still seeks despite his disillusionment. Overall, the song uses humor to comment on societal constructs of love and marriage, and the unrealistic expectations that people often have.

J'aime les z'haricots
I love beans
C'était vraiment pas normal
That was really not normal
Et ce trou cérébral
And that cerebral hole
Venait me couper les bras
Made me lose my arms
J'ai rompu mes fiançailles
I broke off my engagement
Mais le remords me tenaille
But remorse gnaws at me
Car pour moi l'idéal
Because to me, the ideal
C'est le bonheur conjugal
Is marital happiness
