He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

On m'enseigne à Nanterre l'anglais bien gentiment
The song "Le bonheur passait" by Pierre Perret is about a bittersweet encounter with "happiness" or "joy." The singer is certain that he saw happiness pass by when he saw a woman with a tattoo of his name on her arm. He describes her as small and agile, with a graceful and delicately shaped profile. However, despite the opportunity for romance and positivity in his life, the singer is preoccupied with his own despair. He had just been dumped by his fiancée and lost his job, and as such cannot fully engage with the moment he experiences with the girl.

Le bonheur passait, j'en suis certain,
I am sure that happiness passed by,
When I saw her quick and so small,
There are, in the month of May, clear mornings,
Dont l'enchantement est méconnu
Whose enchantment is unknown,
Au faîte de son bras de satin
At the top of her satin arm,
Elle avait fait tatouer un prénom
She had a name tattooed,
Et ce que je vous dis, croyez-le ou non
And what I'm telling you, believe it or not,
Mais ce prénom-là c'était le mien
But that name was mine
Mon karma corrigea son chemin
My karma corrected its path,
L'amour était-il enfin venu?
Had love finally come?
C'est à moi, à moi seul qu'elle offrit
It was to me alone that she offered
Son profil découpé dans l'azur
Her profile cut out in the blue,
Elle avait la grâce et l'encolure
She had the grace and the neck
Of a filly that won the grand prize
Ma fiancée m'avait plaqué le matin
My fiancée had dumped me in the morning,
Et je venais de perdre mon boulot
And I had just lost my job
Me who already had a foot in the grave
J'ai dit "Ma bonne étoile a fait fort!
I said "My lucky star has done well!
Before the reaper takes a shot at you
It's God sending you reinforcement"
L'éclosion de quelque mot fleuri
The blooming of some flowery word
Eut pu modifier notre destin
Could have changed our destiny
Mais comment savoir à priori
But how to know in advance
Qu'un succube était sur mon chemin?
That a succubus was on my path?
Lui parler me sembla saugrenu
Talking to her seemed absurd to me
Not even a sweet word came to me
Elle s'évapora dans le lointain
She evaporated into the distance
Ma sylphide aux semelles de vent
My sylph with wind soles
S'envola au souffle du printemps
Flew away on the breath of spring
Une mouche piquée au bout des seins
A fly stung at the tip of her breasts
Whose waist would have fit in my hand
Fredonnait une chanson imbécile
Hummed a stupid song
Le bonheur c'est toujours pour demain
Happiness is always for tomorrow
Le bonheur c'est toujours pour demain
Happiness is always for tomorrow
