Each Wave That Breaks
Piers Faccini Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere else a river runs
Somewhere else the rains have come
Oh I'd leap I'd tumble and fall
And I won't keep I'd lose it all

And the ocean knows
Each wave that breaks
Is coming home
Is coming home

Somewhere else a rose will grow
Somewhere else a time to sow
Oh I'd break but I won't miss
How I ache for one last kiss

And the ocean knows
Each wave that breaks
Is coming home
Is coming home

No way there no way home
No way back I'm going home

No way there no way home
No way back I'm going home

Overall Meaning

In Piers Faccini's song "Each Wave That Breaks", the lyrics tell a story of someone who is longing to be somewhere else. The first two lines "Somewhere else a river runs, Somewhere else the rains have come" suggest that the singer desires to be in a different place, perhaps where things are more abundant and fruitful. The lines "Oh I'd leap I'd tumble and fall, And I won't keep I'd lose it all" imply that the singer is willing to take risks and give up everything, including their current life or situation, to find what they are looking for.

The chorus "And the ocean knows, Each wave that breaks, Is coming home, Is coming home" serves as a reminder that although the singer may be searching for something in a new place, each wave that breaks on the shore is ultimately heading back to its origin, back to where it belongs. This could suggest that no matter how far the singer travels, they too will eventually find their way back to where they belong.

The second verse "Somewhere else a rose will grow, Somewhere else a time to sow, Oh I'd break but I won't miss, How I ache for one last kiss" continues the theme of the singer looking for something new and different. The lines "I'd break but I won't miss, How I ache for one last kiss" suggest that the singer is conflicted about leaving their current situation behind, implying that although they desire something new, they may still feel a sense of loss or longing.

Overall, "Each Wave That Breaks" is a beautifully crafted song that explores themes of longing, risk-taking, and finding one's place in the world. The choice of imagery, particularly the ocean and waves, is powerful, as it evokes images of endless possibility and the constant flow of life.

What a beautiful song.  It feels like the coolness of the rain on a tired face.
