green Green Grass Of Home
Piet Veerman Lyrics

The old home town looks the same
As I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my mama and papa
Down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home

Yes they'll all be there to meet me
Al creatures smiling sweetly
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home
The old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on
Down the lane I'll walk with my sweet Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
I'ts good to touch the green, green grass of home
Then I awake and look around me
Cold gray walls that surround me
And I realise, that I was only dreaming'
There's a guard and there's a sad old padre
Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
Again I'll touch the green, green grass of home
Yes, they'll all be there to meet me

In the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me beneath the green, green grass of home

Overall Meaning

Piet Veerman's "Green Green Grass of Home" is a song about a person who has just returned home after a long time away. The first verse describes the singer's arrival in his hometown and his joy at being reunited with his parents and childhood sweetheart, Mary. The second verse details the singer's nostalgic trip down memory lane, as he walks past his childhood home and plays on the old oak tree. However, the third verse provides a sharp contrast to the previous verses, as we learn that the singer is actually a prisoner, dreaming of his homecoming. This twist ending highlights the theme of yearning for a simpler, happier time, which is a common thread throughout the song.

The lyrics of "Green Green Grass of Home" are imbued with a sense of nostalgia and yearning for a time that we can never truly return to. The imagery of the green grass and the old oak tree represent the singer's longing for the familiarity and comfort of his childhood, while the references to his parents and Mary evoke a sense of home and belonging. The twist ending of the song, in which the singer realizes he is dreaming while still in prison, emphasizes the bittersweet nature of the song's message.
