So Gangster
Pigeon John Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I feel so damn gangster
I'm a gangster for real
It's just one of those days
I feel the sun rise around me
All the clouds ran away
Something funny 's goig on
Ok, now where's all the trafic
Is someone tryin'a clown me
Why do I feel fantastic
I'm used to think all's going wrong
The lyrics to Pigeon John's "So Gangster" are a contemplative reflection on what it means to be a gangster. At first glance, the lyrics might seem straightforward and straightforwardly affirming of the singer's gangster identity, but on closer examination, they reveal a more complex picture. The singer claims to "feel so damn gangster," but it's not entirely clear what that means. Is he claiming to be a member of a gang or just someone who embodies the gangster ethos? He describes feeling fantastic and sensing that "something funny's going on," but he doesn't seem to be actively involved in any criminal activity. Instead, he seems to be observing his surroundings and taking pleasure in his surroundings.
Later in the song, he speaks directly to his audience, saying, "I'm used to think all's going wrong." Here, we see that the singer might have had a difficult past or be in a bad situation, which he has used his gangster identity to overcome. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but they could be seen as a meditation on what it means to be a gangster, why people are drawn to that identity, and how such an identity can be both limiting and empowering at the same time.

HOW TO RAP
Pigeon John was interviewed for the book series HOW TO RAP and HOW TO RAP2, and shared his rapping techniques. Here he talks about editing lyrics.
"A lot of times with the first draft, it’s just like [for] an author—
you gotta edit that stuff. It’s a lot of times wordy or you repeat
yourself and [have] too many syllables. I definitely cruise
each line and try to make each line deafening. I think in general
the more that I learn about [MCs I admire], they really
do the down work—it sounds effortless, but I think there is
a lot of trying, a lot of editing and pounding and getting the
right tone."

The last time I heard him sing was years ago back in the 90's when I was like 10. He came to a music fest out at Disney World and that was where I heard him for the first time. I forgot his name for all these years until he came and popped in my head recently so here I am looking him up. This is interesting this song.
