They then landed opening slots on shows for Broken Social Scene, DFA 1979, and Hot Hot Heat, and received the honor of Best Unsigned Band at the 2002 North by Northeast music conference (Canada's version of SXSW in the U.S.). Soon after, Pilate inked a deal with indie MapleMusic Recordings, which then released their full-length debut, Caught by the Window, in 2003. The album produced two hits on national radio and MuchMusic, as the guys toured North America, Australia, and Japan. Their follow-up, Sell Control for Life's Speed, appeared back at home in mid-2006, after which the band changed its name to Pilot Speed. The quartet had signed with Wind-Up earlier that same year following the completion of its third album overall (and first as Pilot Speed), Into the West; the label released the record that September.
Don't Waste Your Breath

Your wine's tasteless
She leaves you sleeping with your ghosts
Sleeping with your ghosts
It holds you tight, between these lines
It holds you tight
It holds you tight, between these lines
Did the fires rip through your town
Did you wait for rain to drown your sorrow
In the light your hurt concealed
In the bed your soul revealed
I'm sleeping with your ghosts
Sleeping with your ghosts
It holds you tight, between these lines
It holds you tight
It holds you tight, between these lines
It holds you tight
You walk cross these fields in solitude
The sting of your tears forestalls you
This world lies in fear and waiting
Just open your eyes it's there for the taking
It's holds you tight
But it's your right
But it's your right
Hear the wind through the trees
Feel the tide of the sea
See the world at morning light
Feel my heart beat tonight
Over sea and over land
Feel life slip through your hands
I'll raise it up for you to see
But don't waste your breath on me
Don't waste your breath on me
In Pilate's song "Don't Waste Your Breath," the lyrics describe a person who is in love with someone that is not reciprocating that love. The love interest is referred to as faceless and tasteless, implying that they are not worthy of the singer’s love. The singer also mentions the idea of ghosts, indicating that this person is still haunted by the memory of their love interest. The singer brings up the idea of fire destroying a town and waiting for rain to drown your sorrow, which can be seen as a metaphor for waiting for love that will never come.
The second verse addresses the pain that this person is feeling from unrequited love. They walk in solitude and are constantly reminded of their unrequited feelings. However, the lyrics suggest that the world is waiting for them to open their eyes and take what life has to offer. The singer encourages this person to stop living in the past and to move on from their unreciprocated love.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase “It holds you tight, between these lines” which can be interpreted as being stuck in their emotions and not being able to move forward. The final lines of the song state “But don't waste your breath on me, Don't waste your breath on me” indicating that the person in love should not continue to hold onto their feelings for the singer as they will not be returned.
