They then landed opening slots on shows for Broken Social Scene, DFA 1979, and Hot Hot Heat, and received the honor of Best Unsigned Band at the 2002 North by Northeast music conference (Canada's version of SXSW in the U.S.). Soon after, Pilate inked a deal with indie MapleMusic Recordings, which then released their full-length debut, Caught by the Window, in 2003. The album produced two hits on national radio and MuchMusic, as the guys toured North America, Australia, and Japan. Their follow-up, Sell Control for Life's Speed, appeared back at home in mid-2006, after which the band changed its name to Pilot Speed. The quartet had signed with Wind-Up earlier that same year following the completion of its third album overall (and first as Pilot Speed), Into the West; the label released the record that September.

I can't tell you what it brings
So carry your greef on down to the port
Tonight were bound for other shores
We live like the sun
Comin' up, comin' down
Ever distant, ever proud
All the wounds that never bleed
Wounds that never bleed
Wounds that never bleed
Just hold the line
You'll find my time's not enough
I'll hold the line
You'll find my time's not enough
Can beauty be stark, so sad and wise
Just like an ocean in your eyes
Can I carry the load, can I slip in your skin
I'm on the outside lookin' in
Outside lookin' in
Outside lookin' in
And just hold the line
You'll find my time's not enough
And just hold the line
And you'll find my time's not enough
It's the peace that I'm defending
I don't know son, I don't know
Knowledge bears a price unending
I don't know son, I don't know
Just hold the line
And you'll find that time's not enough
There's a light on your face and a hope the breeze
A knowing whisper in the trees
There's money to burn and books to read
Another lie to be believed
In Pilate's song "Hold The Line," the singer invites the listener to look outside their front door, where a ship is coming in, carrying an unknown cargo. The singer tells the listener to carry their grief down to the port, indicating that whatever the ship brings, it may be a source of solace. The song's tone is wistful and introspective, with the singer questioning whether beauty can coexist with sadness and wisdom, and whether they can truly empathize with others' experiences from their own position "on the outside looking in."
The chorus, which repeats throughout the song, consists of the singer urging the listener to "hold the line," and promising that "you'll find my time's not enough." The meaning of this refrain is open to interpretation, but it may suggest that the singer feels overwhelmed by the passage of time, and is urging the listener to stay strong in the face of this inexorable force. The song ends with the singer musing on the contradictions and falsehoods that exist in the world, but also hinting at the possibility of finding hope and light in the natural world.

Where my sad thoughts converge, where I seek liberation from all the choices that bring me discouragement in life, I return here, in this song I have collected the failures of my life and where I have sought a veil of hope in better moments, thanks for everything you have transmitted to me, if I am what I am, it is also thanks to you.
