Zach Smith is noted for his unique style of bass-playing, as he combines strumming (the most prevalent of his techniques), popping, and slapping. He uses an Alembic Stanley Clarke bass and is currently working on a solo project entitled Systems Officer. Smith tends to write most of the instrumental parts of Pinback's songs while Rob Crow's forte is lyric-writing. At their concerts, they are known for giving away limited edition tour EPs. Both feel strongly about keeping their music in the independent scene, free from excessive media attention and corporate pressures that could affect the band's original sound.

Pinback Lyrics

Oh Sheena kneels and prays over the graves
and wishes of her god to be so brave
the roses she had picked fall from her hand.
Onto the ground which will soon hold her
Sheena Bella
Oh Sheena Bella walks
and Sheena Bella strays
Oh, fetal Sheena counts off her last days
The colors of the grass
The shadows on the floor
The precious things that she had no time for.
She was only 4 years old.
She was barely 4 years old.
Sheena Bella
Sheena Bella
Sheena Bella
Sheena Bella
They're gonna kill us all
They're gonna kill us all
The lyrics of Pinback's song Seville depict a tragic story of a young girl named Sheena Bella who prays and prepares herself for an impending doom. The repeated line "They're gonna kill us all" creates a sense of anxiety and desperation. Sheena Bella is portrayed as a helpless victim who is coming to terms with her inevitable death. The imagery of her picking roses and the flowers falling from her hands onto the ground symbolize the fragility of life and the tragedy of young death. The lyrics become more heart-wrenching as Sheena Bella is revealed to be only four years old, barely starting her life, but already counting off her last days. The final repetition of her name emphasizes the tragedy of her death and creates a haunting atmosphere.
