Definition of Illusion: something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.

The moving balls create the overall impression (illusion) that all of the movement involved is circular. But in reality, the movement of each ball is straight.

Another example of an illusion is the video itself. film: a sequence of images of moving objects photographed by a camera and providing the optical illusion of continuous movement when projected onto a screen

That's not necessary. I created this using a 3D program. You could also use flash, and possibly even photoshop. First you make the outer circle, then create the inner circle (made up of 8 balls, with 45 degree angles between each ball - 45 X 8 = 360) exactly half the diameter of the outer circle. Then you animate the inner circle in 2 ways. First animate the inner circle to move 1 time around the outer circle (360 degrees) ...at the same time, animate the 8 balls to actually rotate around themselves (360 degrees) within the same time that group of 8 balls makes 1 complete circle. So just by creating that animation, the illusion will work. No calculating timing.

I like the way each ball on its straight line path follows its neighbor through the center. If you were to replace the outer circle with a pair of parallel lines, but keep the balls moving straight across and back through a central line in the same co-ordinated fashion then we'd see a traveling wave. This also seems to explain how we see a real wave traveling across water when it's just the surface going up and down vertically.

I'd be interested to see this in 3D. With the Red circle as a sphere, each line an orbit of said sphere.

Does such a video exist? I understand acceleration and deceleration would be a factor in maintaining the speeds that each circle is travelling.

Very cool. I'd like to see this demo'd with real, physical objects. I think if you used a large steel ball bearing as the inner circle and placed points of light strategically so that their reflections appear to be on the edge of the sphere you could re-create this illusion on a surface that doesn't actually move in straight lines. To make this more practical you might have to move the outer ring instead of the inner but the effect would be the same.

Just in case anyone is interested, this is exactly how an AC electric motor works. The stator (the fixed part of the motor) is made up of magnetic poles divided into several segments (typically 6 or 12) just like the lines in the video. At any point in cross section the magnetic field oscillates sinusoidally in a 'straight line' from one magnetic pole across to its facing pole. When you look at all of the poles together the magnetic field appears to rotate around inside the motor. The rotor acts, to put it simply, just like a plain fixed magnet. It is forced to move around to follow the rotating field.

For anyone still confused, the fact that each ball moves along one line can be easily proven by simple geometry. How you see it just depends on whether you concentrate on the ball, or the circle. It’s caused by the fact that the inner circle rotates at twice the angular velocity of its centre. So, at any time, the ball’s movement is exactly twice as much as the circle centre’s movement. And that keeps the ball on its line of destiny. That’s my intuitive explanation!

I can’t post diagrams, so you’ll have to create your own Just create 4 little congruent triangles inside the inner circle, not outside. Then compare distances to the line of it's movement. That’s the geometric proof and your little puzzle. You don’t even need to use trig functions - that’s the beauty of congruent triangles, so many equal sides and angles that do the job for you.

That's amazing! I don't recall ever seeing an optical illusion that didn't appear as a distortion. Instead, this one seems to be based on logic.

This isn't an illusion because it doesn't "deceive", in the sense that both interpretations of the animation are correct - the balls can either be seen moving collectively as a wheel rolling inside a circle, or individually as balls moving in a straight line. Nice song by the way :)

It looks easy to make. What you do not realise until you try to make your own is that they are accelerating and decelerating. A very well edited illusion.

Edit:
I've now spent 55 minutes devising a way of creating a "sinusoidal movement in one dimension", as it were, in Premiere Pro. It works, but just barely. The accuracy of acceleration and deceleration has to be perfect for this illusion to work.

It can be done quite easily, yes, but that's not always what you want. I wanted to see if I could create a version of this in Premiere Pro from scratch without animating an actual circle that rotates inside another circle.

The best procedure I came up with was to create a path around half the ~~diameter~~ circumference of the outer circle where one ball moved at a constant speed in two dimensions. By hindering it from moving in the y-axis, it was possible to make the net speed in the x-axis to be conserved. By doing this, I had made a ball accelerate and decelerate in a manner I thought was neccessary for the illusion to work. This was made with keyframes and was quite inaccurate, but I was able to make a square that only distorted a bit as it rotated.

Agree. Illusion (in most cases) involves some sort of contradiction. This example would be a canonical illusion if it would seem that the points do not move on straight lines or that the basic parts forbid resemblance of moving circle. It does not, and this is just an example how set of many simple parts generates complex result, intuitevly undeducably from inspecting one simple part (kinda like synergy).

Start with two rings, such that the circumference of the smaller one is exactly 1/2 the circumference of the larger one. If you then rotate the smaller ring within the larger one, then any point along the circumference of the smaller ring will trace a straight line path along the diameter of the larger ring.

The point also is that the velocity of each ball is sinus(a+n) where a changes from 0 to 360 degrees repeatedly and n is a phase shift. First ball has n=0 degrees, second n=45, third n=90 etc.

There are many references to the 'Tusi couple' on which this is based, but remarkably little in the way of explanation for why the points move along a straight line. But you can figure it out from Fig. 1 of https://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/sites/default/files/Preprints/P457.pdf (on page 8), bearing in mind that we are dealing with an isosceles triangle, which accounts for the fact that one of the marked angles is twice the other (this is on a history of science site not a mathematics one so this is not explained, but the diagram is helpful).

Now do that while the balls dont just move on a flat plane back and forth, but rather actually rotate 3D dimensionally and viewing it from an orthogonal perspective gives you this exact same effect, then make the view point spin around! I wonder how weird that would look, or if it would even make any illusion, i might have to test this some time

Actually, this illusion is more than just "balls moving along straight lines". Look closely at the vector of each ball (i.e., the speed at which it travels.)

Each ball starts out moving slowly, then speeds up as it reaches the center of the circle. It then begins to gently slow down until it stops at the edge of the circle.

If the vectors of the individual balls were not like this, it wouldn't look anything like it does, and would not appear to be a circle moving inside of a circle.

It's all about the timing. The moment you start adding a line with a ball on it at a time, it doesn't start it's movement in the exact moment the preceding ball reaches circle's curved line, because the illusion would be gone.
But it's awesome anyways!

If both ways of generating this image are indistinguishable from each other, it's not an illusion.

This would be an Illusion, if it was done with actual, physical objects (and the eye would mistake the dots rotating with dots moving on lines). There's nothing to mistake here.

Is this the same for an inner circle of any size or is the effect only happening because of the speed and size and other factors have been tuned to exhibit this "illusion"?

there was a ride at a local theme park that would do a similar effect. it was called 'The Rubber Band' because (and, note: most people missed this point, stared straight ahead and got dizzy) if you turned your head towards the direction of movement, it would look like you were moving straight, headlong into the fence....then, it would feel like you stopped and it felt like you were going backwards. turn your head again towards the new direction of movement and continue. I never felt dizzy on it. it felt like it's name: like being attached to a horizontal rubber band.

imagine each circle in this video as a ride seat. that's kind if how the ride looked and exactly the effect it gave.

Credit goes not to the fact that the balls are moving in a straight line, but to the fact that they move sequentially. If they all moved to the center of the the big orange circle at once we wouldn't have had the circular move of the the smaller circle.

I've seen this illusion in "Brain Games" where they used it to illustrate how your brain automatically groups the dots into a single entity, so it looks like the dots are revolving, even though they are really moving in straight lines.

consider the stage where the two balls were present and try to find the mean area centre ( like centre of massbut with area not masses) and find the locus of that centre. It will be a circle..and the centre as well as it's corresponding locus would remain unchanged as we keep adding the balls...

It's both :) By using geometry, your mind is tricked into believing that all of the motion is circular or curved, but in reality, most of the motion follows a straight line.

The SPEED of each individual dot constantly changes (sine wave)
although they always move in a straight line.
Straight line motion happens only if circumference of inner group of dots = 1/2 the outer circle.
If the diameter of the circle of dots is smaller than 1/2 the outer circle, each dots traces a modified sine wave around the inner edge of the large circle.
If the circle of dots is larger than 1/2 the outer, each dots follows an elliptical orbit about the center of the outer circle.

Geometry, yes. but not an illusion in my book. This starts with the maths of a specific rolling circle, calculates where certain points are going to be, only displays those points, and finally says, "Hey, look! The illusion of a rolling circle!"

If I stick lights on a bicycle wheel and then spin it in a dark room, you'll see a circle. Is that an illusion? No; the wheel is still there, even if you can't see it. If I simulate it in a computer, there's no physical wheel any more - but it's still got to be there in the maths, or the program doesn't work. It's just the same in this case. This is the simulation of a wheel of radius 1 with lights spaced around the rim (they don't actually need to be evenly-spaced, any more than those on my bike wheel), rolling around the inside of a circle of radius 2. You can't see the wheel directly, but it's there, in the choice of points and the relative timings at which they're moved - whether that was the original intention or not. It's just hidden in the maths that the program is using.

what if instead of 8 balls going across a circle, you have 8 polarized laser beams all converging in the same spot.... the lasers polarizations are equally divided into 22.5 degrees just like the lines across the circle, and they have the same frequency, but each of the lasers are 45 degrees out of phase with each other, thus doing the same thing that this illusion is doing... it could lead to interesting physics!

Two fun facts about this that I find Interesting:
1. The distance between any two circles is unchanged, despite the movement.
2. A big circle, with the diameter of the outer points of every small circle combined, rolling around in a circle the size of the red one in the background, would have the exact same effect as this illusion.

Indeed, there are pairs of smaller balls in a simple harmonic motion with the same frequency, the phase difference between them is 90 degrees, and their movement is on 2 perpendicular directions, so the distance between them is always equal to the radius of the bigger circle ( because d^2=x^2+y^2 so A^2(sin^2(wt)+cos^2(wt))=A^2. amplitude being the radius of the bigger circle :) This is combined with the tendency of our brain to create continuous motion. :D :D :D

Well, just as a group of dots moving in a vertical line at the same time would look like a horizontal line, them moving in the patter you've shown would look like a circle.

This helped me appreciate what I have already thought of before, but more deeply appreciate now. Illusions are simply things that escape our reasoning. This video actually breaks down the mathematical order behind something that to God is no illusion, but is the logical and mathematical way of things. In this case, the way of the circle.

Its no illusion, because both perceptions are true - that of a circle rotationg or that of points moving along a line.

If you consider it as a circle and not individual points : the circle IS "rolling" around and every point comprising its circumference successively reaches for the outer circle circumference. Which implies the circle has to undertake two full rotations.

But if you consider the circle as the points making it, you can observe they actually just move in a straight line and that the POINTS motion is strictly linear.

For whatever reason, our brains interpret what we're seeing as a single circle rolling around inside a red circle, as opposed to a bunch of white circles moving in straight lines.
Collectively, the circles make a single object which is indeed moving around in a circular motion, but I'd be hesitant to even call that an actual illusion, because that is in fact what a circle moving around inside a bigger circle would indeed look like. There's no trickery going on from that point of view.

In order to perceive that the balls make up a single object which is rolling around inside the red circle, your brain has to be able to perceive the individual circles as if they were rotating relative to the perceived ball, and the reason our brains can fill in those gaps is because the circles are white and have no detail. That's where the illusion comes in; that's where your brain fills in information that isn't actually there. If you were to put lines inside the white circles, then the illusion would be broken because you would no longer be able to perceive them as if they were rotating.

So the actual illusion here is not that the individual circles are moving in a circular motion (as opposed to in straight lines), but rather that the individual circles are rotating, even though nothing of the sort is actually happening.

The total amount of the dots make up an object that move in a circular motion, each individual dot moves in a straight line. I don't think I would call this an illusion as much as just seeing a thing from two different perspectives. But interesting none the less.

I think the "one ball at a time" part would have been more intriguing without the black help lines. Still, an interesting visualization of hypocycloids (not so much an illusion, and definitely not "crazy", at least not if you consider mathematics a sane science)

Hah "illusion." This reminds me of my dynamics course in university. This is all about the Coriolis effect; it all depends on the viewer's frame of reference.

Technically, the white spots ARE spinning around an axis, only this axis is itself spinning in a circle with a radius = (1/2 radius of outer circle - radius of white spots) around the center point within the outer circle. From the frame of reference of someone standing in one of the white spots or someone standing in the middle of the outer circle, it will seem like they are just going back and forth in straight lines. From the frame of reference of the spinning axis, the spots are rotating. From the frame of reference of a third party viewing the entire system (i.e. us watching the video), both things can be appreciated depending on what is being focused on, thus letting us study the relative angular velocities and accelerations.

It's not an illusion, it's just a very neat example of the Coriolis effect. For another similar, albeit simpler, example of the Coriolis effect, look up the Geneva drive used in watchmaking and for film projectors. If anything, this "illusion" is just 8 Geneva drives put together in synchronized frequencies. Very neat nonetheless.

Now imagine each white circle is moved by a piston. And all white circles are attached to a circular shaft. Imagine the shaft is connected to the larger wheel. Ok I'm confused.

If the balls were points on the outer perimeter of an inner circle, the circle would be moving just as perceived, with the balls moving in the straight line. So in that respect, it's not really an illusion. But still pretty neat though.

"The moment" that "It happened" is called the gestalt switch. This is an example of illusory contours, (where your brain perceives the moving circles as being attached to a disk. You understand that the circles are being propelled by the "disk" rolling around on the inside of the red background, when in reality they are independent and their movement is coincidental. I like the square that Artifactorfiction saw; that was one I had to go back to find.

I wouldn't call this an illusion, just 2 different ways of visualising the same thing. It's not like the wheel isn't actually rotating around the inside of the other one - it is! It also happens that you can pick 8 points on that wheel that describe a straight line - but that doesn't invalidate the first interpretation. You've even said in another comment that that is how you created it.

The ball IS rolling in a circle around the screen. The ball just so happens to be made up of dots that move in straight lines. Dunno what's so 'mind melting' about it...if your mind is that easily melted, maybe stay out of the sun.

I don't think anyone's mind is melting over this. It's just interesting. Do things always have to be either mind melting or incredibly stupid to you? Most things in life aren't black and white.

Justin Hewitt It's not interesting. It's an effect of coincidence. The balls are placed evenly from each other in a way that they will be rolling in a circle within a circle.
The width of the rolling ball is the same as the radius of the circle. So they will evenly go around it. Which, in effect, also makes it so that each ball will simply go from one end of the circle to the next in a straight line. It's an effect of physics and coincidence, not an effect of an illusion... there isn't any visual trickery here.

However you perceive it is the reality.If you look at the whole thing, you see a rolling ball; if you simply look at one dot, you'll notice it's path is a straight line. You're not viewing an illusion, you're viewing reality no matter how you look at it.

That actually sounds interesting to me lol. And I never said whether I thought it was truly an illusion or not so I don't have any comment on that part. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

It sucks it's not interesting to you but I don't know. Just the way that everything happens to work together like this interests me. Sorry I don't have the same exact thoughts as you.

This isn't an illusion. This is more of a mathematical trick.
You can say the balls are moving in a straight line all you want, but if you're intention WAS to make them move in a circle, evenly spaced from each other, they'd still be just moving in a straight line from a different perspective because of their shape and position within that space.

This isn't an illusion, as however someone perceives this, it is the reality.

This is nice to look at, but it's just showing geometry. Big circle has diameter x. Small circle has diameter 1/2x. Roll small circle inside big circle such that only 1 point overlaps 1 point from the big circle, and any point from the small circle will travel in a straight line through the centre of the big circle.

I am not surprised to see most here don't think that this is an optical illusion. But this in fact would be if it were purposefully done in real life with actual instruments. Imagine a black background with white balls on black bars moving in about in their usual straight lines with the correct speeds applied. Now add a different colored outer circle in front of the whole display that you can see through the middle of. Your eyes would be instantly fooled into thinking of the same pattern shown in this video until you actually got close enough to make out the minute details. The only difference here is that you can't do that with this virtualized version without it actually showing you what is really happening.
