Echoes

Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
An echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one called us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
Something stirs and something tries
Starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand
The best I can

And no one called us to the land
And no one crosses there alive
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Almost everyday you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me
To rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabys
And no one makes me close my eyes

So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Pink Floyd's song "Echoes" set the tone for the entire piece. With an albatross hanging motionless overhead, and the sound of an echo of a distant time coming across the sand, the lyrics create an atmosphere of isolation and otherworldliness. The line "no one called us to the land" establishes the sense that the singers are outsiders, detached from society and living in an uncertain world.

As the song progresses, the lyrics continue to evoke a sense of isolation coupled with a longing for connection. The lines "Strangers passing in the street / By chance two separate glances meet / And I am you and what I see is me" suggest that despite the separation between individuals, there is a fundamental sameness that draws us together. The lines "And help me understand / The best I can" hint that this connection is difficult to fully grasp or communicate.

Throughout the song, the lyrics are paired with haunting melodies and atmospheric soundscapes that create a dreamlike feeling. From the eerie opening notes to the soaring crescendos later in the piece, "Echoes" is a showcase of Pink Floyd's ability to create immersive sonic environments that marry perfectly with their lyrics, emphasizing the sense of otherworldliness and detachment established in the words.

I like "echoes" the best of all Pink Floyd tunes. Especially, I feel power and groovin' the most of Pink Floyd around 1970. Also their sound was shining !

One of the best PINK FLOYD pieces! I love it! PINK FLOYD has shaped the mind and the spirit of several generations and they still do. Their music is not just great music but so much more. If you listen to the lyrics there is no way not to be influenced to become a better human being. I wish so much to see David and Roger together again...

Is anyone else brought to tears by the overwhelming beauty and power of this song? Am I alone, blinded by the brilliance of this quartet?

@mcskillby did you ever get it down? I’d be interested to hear it

The first time I heard this was on a visit to my cousin's home he had recently built on a set of Bowers & Wilkins speakers. We listened to Live at Pompeii from beginning to end. I believe Echoes is the greatest rock song ever written. It's the magnum opus of Pink Floyd. The experience of listening to it along with the images in the film... It's a journey through time. You begin to grasp what it must have been like to live in the 60's. A momentous period of the 20th century. Echoes, I believe, is the climax of 20th century music. I've yet to hear anything that's so fundamentally sound, so complete and says so much with so few words. Enjoy.
