This is my favorite pink floyd song. It speaks to me. I can lay in bed sober, blasted, it says the same message to me. Life is beautiful...until it isn't. You're all alone, floating, miserable crying out for help. a sound sent out. It's echoed back to you. You hear it, it fades away, you keep trying and it comes back to you...followed by the most beautiful guitar solo ever, you have found peace. The same peace that you had before, on your own, but you need someone to share it with. This 22 minute song speaks years of wisdom to me. I hope someone hears it too. My favorite, most well thought out song I've known since I was a child. Thank you mom for showing me this band.

I remember in 1974 or 1975 I was driving one night from Fort Campbell Ky. to Belleville, Il. There was ice on the road and on the trees. There was a place along the road where trees hung out over the roadway for quite a long time. Just as I entered this part of the road Echoes began playing on my 8 track player. My headlights reflecting off the ice on the trees made this song come alive, I could not have picked a more perfect place to listen to this beautiful song. Every since that night I do not fail to remember that scene in my mind and the feelings come alive again, without a doubt one of Pink Floyd’s best songs ever recorded. Thank you Mr. Gilmour and Mr. Wright for blessing us with the awesome music performed by Pink Floyd!

The “screaming” sounds in the middle spacey section were achieved by plugging into a wahwah pedal backwards, an accidental discovery by David. As always, Pink Floyd capitalized and exploited their “mistakes”. The picked 4 note chord in “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” was David playing an Am on the “wrong fret”. He apologized, but Roger heard the magic. The third and very sensual piano chord in “Us & Them” was Rick playing an F#m but accidentally playing an F natural with his thumb. In all cases, they had the presence of mind and artistic curiosity to say, “wait a minute, it’s better like that” and not hold on to what was “correct”.

This takes me back. I'm 29 now so Pink Floyd wasn't now part of my culture growing up, besides my dad listening to them and me watching The Wall for the first time with friends when we were like 18. Torrented it somewhere. But, god, I wish I could go back to the time I discovered "Echoes." I'd smoke some pot as a teenager, get zooted, lay in the back of my pick up truck in a field at night and look at the Southern skies and all the stars...listening to the composition in entirety. I would go so many places. I miss those simple days and I miss feeling the nice early Autumn chill while Echoes blared and I rode my high...sometimes seeing a shooting star. Even saw a meteor show one night. I want to do it again. I just recently beat stage 4 cancer and am getting my health back and have a different outlook on life. Maybe I'll find a girl to enjoy it too while we also lay in my truck bed and blare echoes.

I'm not one of those people who are all about nostalgia, but a time rewind for a bit to to experience the calmness and the cool air while hearing this while toked out would be a nice gift. Funny how at times, as you get older, you find it so hard to find simplicity and joy in things anymore.

I first heard this song in maybe 2007 when grandad was picking me up from school (I was seven) this will always be my favourite because of how it just hit me and because of the memory of grandads face lighting up when I said I liked it, pink floyd then became our car music always he passed away June 2020 my heart still aches, wish you were here was played at his funeral I’ve got his pink floyd tattoo booked in next week and I’m drunk sat on the lounge floor listening once again to this utter masterpiece thinking of him

The guitar solo part, but especially from 5:53 to its end at 7:01, is absolute pure euphoria in every way imaginable. it just makes me so indescribably happy in ways that really nothing else can... and no other piece of music makes me feel like I do when listening to this song. so many emotions throughout the entire thing, without a doubt one of my most favorite songs ever

I did the same thing, but at a small dive bar and people there were getting annoyed at the screeching sound part of the song. Most folks at the bar had no idea it was Floyd as this isn't one of the more popular numbers from them, but it's very underrated and my personal fav from them. I think The Wall was way too commercial and they had sold out by then.

It's a little known fact that this is actually the radio edit. The original version was fourteen and a half hours long. The "screaming" section of the song is a shortened version of hour six. In live performances Nick Mason would take that opportunity to go get takeout for the rest of the band. There was also an extended organ solo during which Gilmour would restring his guitar, as his strings were completely melted by the end of his twenty-third solo.

When the song was over the band members had to be placed on glucose drips to rehydrate, which prompted Waters to declare that the song "could perhaps be a bit long".

I heard Nick drove to Italy for takeout, and was inspired with the idea to make a movie there. The film was originally 79 hours long, including a pie eating scene that lasted 4 hours.

In 1978, they played at a birthday bash for one of their roadies and were specifically asked to play the 14 hour version of Echoes. In hour two, while David Gilmour and Rick Wright had an extended blues solo duet, Roger Waters took a break and managed to pen the entirety of The Wall. Nick Mason went over to a store nearby and bought a Mellotron, set it up, and came back and gave it to Wright, who played an improvised classical suite with it. By hour 9, Wright had cheated on his wife twice, Gilmour had played 73 solos and had Italian food delivered, Waters had taken ten bass lessons from Gilmour, and Mason had gambled away a large portion of his life savings. The roadie quit and they were never allowed in Bristol again.
