Money
Pink Floyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four-star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team

Money, get back
I'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do-goody-good bullshit
I'm in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet

Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise
That they're giving none away
Away, away, away
Away, away, away

I was in the right
Yes, absolutely in the right
I certainly was in the right
I was definitely in the right, geezer was cruising for a bruising
Why does anyone do anything?
Yeah
Why does anyone do anything?
I don't know, I was really drunk at the time
I was just telling him it was in, he couldn't get into number two
He was asking why it wasn't coming up on fader eleven

So after our yelling and screaming
I'm telling him why it wasn't coming on fader eleven

Overall Meaning

Pink Floyd's "Money" is a song that delves into the idea of the financial system in contemporary society where people equate money with happiness and power. The song's lyrics are divided into three different sections, each showcasing different perspectives on money. The first section talks about the allure of financial security, suggesting that a good job and more money are the solutions to problems. It also hints at the consumerist culture, with the lyrics "new car, caviar, four-star daydream, think I'll buy me a football team."

The second section presents a different attitude towards wealth. It shows that the ones who already have the wealth like to hold on to it and not share it with others. The lyrics "I'm alright Jack, keep your hands off my stack" depict the possessive nature of humans towards money. The section also includes a reference to the high-fidelity first-class traveling set, indicating that money is necessary to be part of that set.

The third section is more critical, as it suggests that money can lead to crime and evil. The line "Money, so they say, is the root of all evil today," was inspired by the Bible verse, 1 Timothy 6:10 which states "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." In contrast to the previous sections, this part of the song expresses the idea that money should be shared, but with qualifications - "Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie."

Overall, Pink Floyd's "Money" message is clear. It shows that a fair financial system is needed, and wealth should not be concentrated among the few. The song is not just about money, but society as a whole in its exploration of the human condition and the power structures at play.

I remember when the original album came out, I had speaker boxes that I made with speakers from old juke boxes, put them about 2 feet apart facing each other, turned on the black light, smoked a doobie waiting for the acid to kick in, started the album and laid on the floor with my head between the speakers (better than the shit headphones I had) WHAT A TRIP :)
