One In A Million
Pink Floyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Daddy's flown across the ocean
Leaving just a memory
The snapshot in the family album
Daddy, what else did you leave for me?

Daddy, what'd'ja leave behind for me?
All in all it was just a brick in the wall
All in all it was all just bricks in the wall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall Part 1 depict a father leaving his family, creating a void in the life of the child. The child longs for answers from the father, asking him what else he has left for him. The only thing that remains is a snapshot in the family album, leaving the child with nothing but memories to cling to. The metaphorical use of a brick in the wall represents how one life gone may seem insignificant compared to the vastness of the wall, yet it is essential in building the entire wall.

The lyrics of the song explore the theme of abandonment and loss, and how it affects a child's life. It reflects the emptiness that a child experiences when parents leave and highlights the importance of family relationships. A single brick may seem insignificant, but it is a vital component in building a strong foundation.

This audience tape has been around since the 1970’s, so it’s not exactly a “new” tape.

With better and better technology to EQ things, new nuances have been revealed over the last few years in terms of the sound quality.

You can only get as good as the original copy of the tape which was on a reel-to-reel. The reason that there was so much distortion present on the original tape was due to the massive volume of the PA as Floyd played LOUD in those days. Mix that in with a very small club and you don’t have the best acoustics to capture a decent recording.

It’s only this tape and the Stockholm tape for the entirety of 1967 in terms of concert recordings.

There have always been rumors of other tapes from 1966 and 1967 in the Floyd vault. There’s a rehearsal tape from 1967 (RAH? Maybe?) that had the song “Let’s Roll Another One” which made it onto a bootleg album sometime in the 1990’s.

Whatever tapes that the Floyd have, they’re obviously not releasing, otherwise it would have made it onto that massive 65-72 box set.

Would you like to be one in a million?
Would you like to be one in five?
Would you like to know all the hidden meaning?
Before they tell you you've run out of time

Would you like to be one in a million?
Would you like to be one in five?
When they tell you you ain't going nowhere
When they tell you you can't live your life.

Should’ve been included with early years box set along with corrosion and countless others. Truly experimental genius.

damien suil

agree totally..especially if they'd made a real attempt to clean the track up

Syd Floyd

@Nonprofit Remaster Yeah, I tried asking Nick about this one and why it wasn't included in the set since there was a studio recording, never got an answer unfortunately.

they also might not have had access to the tape/thought it was too bad of quality compared to the stockholm one.

SukkaPunch321

I didn’t know there was ever a studio version of this.

Great job! Well done, finally I can even listen to some lyrics, which have always been barely audible. And Syd's guitar too, sounds better and clearer.

I have so many different files of this recording of various qualities. This one is the best I've ever heard.

yo if your read this thank you for getting this sounding better. i wish syd and the boys would have done a studio version but god damn the guitar in this song steals the show

That guitar...Syd sounds like he's looping feedback interspersed with some very nice licks. Seems to be totally in control of what he's doing. Just stellar stuff, and he's doing it live, too!
