The Beginning
Pink Floyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heavy hung the canopy of blue
Shade my eyes and I can see you
White is the light that shines through the dress that you wore

She lay in the shadow of the wave
Hazy were the visions of her playing
Sunshine on her eyes but moonshine made her cry ev'ry time
Green is the colour of her kind

The quickness of the eye deceives the mind
Envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned

Overall Meaning

"The Beginning" is a beautifully crafted song by Pink Floyd that delves into the complexities of human emotions and relationships. The lyrics, opening with "Heavy hung the canopy of blue," set the mood for the melancholic tune. The "canopy of blue" is likely a reference to the sky that is overshadowing the singer, casting a gloom over everything. The next line "Shade my eyes and I can see you" seems to imply that the singer sees someone through this gloom, someone they perhaps cherish. The third line "White is the light that shines through the dress that you wore" paints a vivid picture of the person being visualized, her white dress shining through the blue canopy.

As the song progresses, it delves into the subjects of isolation, longing, and envy. The line "She lay in the shadow of the wave" creates an image of someone lying low amidst all the chaos around them. The "hazy visions of her playing" encapsulate the idea of a person lost in their dreams, with no one to share them with. The following line "Sunshine on her eyes but moonshine made her cry ev'ry time" conveys the feeling of being lost, confused, and longing for something more meaningful.

The final line of the song "Green is the colour of her kind, the quickness of the eye deceives the mind, envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned" carries a deep meaning. Green, the color of envy, is associated with the person being visualized. The quickness of eye deceives the mind refers to how we often envy others without really knowing what they have gone through to get there. The final part of the line "envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned" tells us that envy plagues everyone, whether one is hopeful or hopeless.

Early Floyd is best Floyd. I pretty much have WYWH as a cut-off point. Floyd were best as equals, buddies, mostly apolitical and not chewed up by The Machine.

And Roger was cooler back then, too.

They were the best-looking, then, too.

Give me The Piper and his Gnomes, The Saucer full of Secrets invading Earth, Eugene and his Axe, the rainbow Prisms and have The Crazy Diamond as the Finale!

Start with Syd, end with a tribute to Syd.

The stuff afterwards are still good albums but it's more piece meal by that point, to me. I love individual songs, but I feel like I'm getting sucked into much of their malaise.

This is what I would consider Floyd’s golden era, that time between 1970-1972, when they hadn’t quite “made” it yet, and we’re still so driven to create their masterpiece, while Dark Side, WYWH, Animals, and The Wall are some of the greatest albums ever made, there was so much tension between the band.

Roger calling out chord changes and then jumping on the bass, David's vocals and guitar, Rick's piano. Beautiful.

David’s voice is so beautiful it makes me want to cry.

I LOVE this song so much, and seeing this was unspeakably smashingly brilliant.

David misses a verse and Roger's conducting the whole time and... so much love for these men and the music and even the mistakes that they made. 😘

Roger Waters: A true visionary.
