Fearless
Pink Floyd (320kHz upload) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say the hill's too steep to climb
Chiding
You say you'd like to see me try
Climbing
You pick the place and I'll choose the time
And I'll climb
The hill in my own way
Just wait a while, for the right day
And as I rise above the treeline and the clouds
I look down hearing the sound of the things you said today

Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd, smiling
Merciless, the magistrate turns 'round, frowning
And who's the fool who wears the crown
Go down in your own way
And everyday is the right day
And as you rise above the fear lines in his brown

You look down
Hear the sound of the faces in the crowd

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Fearless" by Pink Floyd are about the courage to pursue one's path despite the doubts and criticisms of others. The song starts with someone telling the singer that the hill he wants to climb is too steep and challenging. However, the singer is determined to climb the hill in his own way and time, regardless of what others may say. As he rises above the clouds and hears the echoes of the doubts and criticisms thrown his way, he remains fearless and focused.

The second verse shifts the focus from the singer to an "idiot" who faces a crowd with a smile, and a magistrate who frowns mercilessly. The lyrics suggest that the "fool" who wears the crown is the one who is willing to go down in his own way, without fear or regret. By rising above the "fear lines" in his "brown," the fool is able to look down and hear the sound of the faces in the crowd who doubted him. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the message of fearlessness and individuality.

Overall, "Fearless" is a song about the power of courage and determination in the face of criticism and doubt. It encourages listeners to be true to themselves and to pursue their goals and dreams, regardless of what others may say or think.

Regret echoes in my heart,
For all the pain I caused, my part.
A fear that seeps, a fear that grew wild,
I was blinded, my ego high.
But now, I see, knowledge is power, truth set me free,
To face my past, my fears to see.
And with understanding comes relief,
The paranoia fades, for my mind to find peace.

Without fear or hesitation, I try,
Standing high, life's light to ignite.

relative poverty is a bitch, man. can't forget it, but nice to let it dissolve for a while on the regular. gotta remember how lucky we are, otherwise you'll drown in all the shit that goes on. lots of stuff that pulls down so it's a good idea to get skilled in the art of floating up

How is it that a song that came out 52 years ago still sounds so fresh? I’ll never grow tired of this song.

@crono3339

First time I heard this song was in a tiny apartment, snowed in on LSD. Mom had bought it for me on an old vinyl and man I was just awash with love at this sound. Grew up listening to Pink Floyd but didn't realize how much I missed through the years. You are right, half a century old and fresh as new grass.
