Hush Hush
Pistol Annies Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Right around Christmas time
Mama made a turkey
Daddy was worried he was gonna have to break up a fight
Everybody was walking on eggshells
Drinking eggnog instead of beer
We were holdin' our tongues, scratchin' our heads
Hush, hush, don't you dare say a word
Hush, hush, don't you know the truth hurts
Hush, hush, when push comes to shove it's best to keep it hush, hush
We were sitting around the dinner table
And we were eating our pumpkin pie
While the sugar-coated pretty little secret was eating everybody alive
Well daddy's reading propaganda
And he's talking 'bout the end of days
Well cheers to the vodka mama's been sneakin'
Let's all gather 'round and pray
Hush, hush, don't you dare say a word
Hush, hush, don't you know the truth hurts
Hush, hush, when push comes to shove it's best to keep it hush, hush
So I snuck out behind the red barn
And I took myself a toke
Since everybody here hates everybody here
Hell I might as well be the joke
I'm gonna dance up on the table
Singing "This Little Light of Mine"
God gave it to me, what good's it gonna do me
If I don't, by God, let it shine
Hush, hush, don't you dare say a word
Hush, hush, don't you know the truth hurts
Hush, hush, when push comes to shove it's best to keep it hush, hush
Hide your tattoo, put on your Sunday best,
Pretend you're not a mess, be the happy family in the front pew
Hush, hush, don't you dare say a word
Hush, hush, don't you know the truth hurts
Hush, hush, when push comes to shove it's best to keep it hush, hush
Hush, hush, don't you dare say a word
Hush, hush, don't you know the truth hurts
Hush, hush, when push comes to shove it's best to keep it hush, hush
"Pistol Annies" is a band consist of Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and Angaleena Presley, who often use their music to share honest stories about everyday life, particularly within Southern culture. In the song "Hush Hush," they tell a story of a family gathering during the holidays, where they are putting on a facade of a happy family in the front pews while dealing with "sugar-coated pretty little secrets" that are tearing them apart. The song starts with the singer revealing that their brother has just come out of rehab during Christmas time while their parents are wary of any conflicts that may arise. They're forced to walk on eggshells and drink eggnog instead of beer, and we learn that the dinner is filled with tension and anxieties. The singer then goes outside to smoke and realizes that no one will accept her for who she is, so she decides to let her light shine by dancing on the table and singing "This Little Light of Mine."

I love how humble Miranda is. Even though she is the biggest well known singer of the group she still stands back and allows these talented women to take the front stage without ego 💜

I absolutely love this song! It's amazing, with three amazing talents... and shows how people are all hypocrites, knowing their families have different problems of every variety, yet if someone slips up and shows even a bit of their own problems, they get judged by the rest, as if they were the only ones.
