They are widely credited to have spearheaded the "Shibuya-kei" movement of Tokyo in the 90s, along with Flipper's Guitar.
They are known for their eclectic and energetic compositions, which often sound like "new" releases from the late 1960s hipster scene. Their catchphrase--"A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"--captured the group's ironic stance but eager attitude. The group broke up in March 2001.
A hugely prolific group, Pizzicato Five would release at least an album-per-year along with various EPs and remix albums during their 16 year-career.
Both Nomiya Maki (野宮真貴) and Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) currently enjoy solo careers - with Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) producing other artists ranging from Puffy and SMAP to Cornelius and kahimi karie(カヒミ・カリィ) - alongside collaborative remix compilations - from Ella Fitzgerald and The Supremes to classic Disney and Thunderbirds (as in Super-Marionated) music on his Shibuya-based Readymade Records label.
On Thursday March 31st, 2011, exactly 10 years after Pizzicato Five disbanded, Konishi Yasuharu announced a new solo project called Pizzicato One. The first release, titled One and Ten Very Sad Songs, consists of covers of English songs, each featuring vocals by various internationally-known artists from around the world.

i heard the phone ring
then it stopped
it woke me up
it's past two in the afternoon
it's raining
my hair is a mess
a crumpled letter on the floor
a letter i wrote
and threw away last night
glasses with wine and the
whisky i drank last night
the cat is walking around
the ashtray full of
cigarette ends
i wonder why the war
is not over
i wonder why
there's still war
when i have a hang-over
i don't need any music
i can't stand
any music
i went through my mail
threw a lot of letters away
had some tea
and the afternoon was over
i just stayed home
waiting for my new lover
whom i called
last night
but thinking of you
isn't war over
today?
i don't think
war will end
why isn't
war over yet?
why isn't
war over?
i was invited
for dinner
to an expensive restaurant
where only rich people go
i don't think i'll be wearing
the clothes i was wearing last night
i'll put on new clothes
and go out
i'll ask my rich friends
'what does it
feel like
to be
rich?'
i wonder if
war will be over
i don't think
war will ever be over
The lyrics of Pizzicato Five's song La Guerre est Finie describe the aftermath of a wild night of drinking and partying, as the singer reflects on the remnants of the evening, including a ringing phone, a crumpled letter, and an ashtray full of cigarette butts. The singer wonders why war is not over, asking the question repeatedly throughout the song. She then talks about her plans to go out later, putting on new clothes and visiting an expensive restaurant, where she plans to ask her rich friends what it's like to be wealthy. Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of a disillusioned individual who is questioning the status quo and seeking answers to some of life's biggest questions.
The repetition of the question "why isn't war over?" throughout the song is a powerful message that highlights the cyclical and ongoing nature of war. The singer's focus on wealth and the lifestyle of the rich is also significant, as they contrast with the larger issues at hand. The song is reflective and contemplative, prompting the listener to think about larger issues of war and inequality.
