Number five!

every time
I think about you
Somehow I feel
It's not fair

we are supposed to be lovers
And to be there for each other
Yet why is it that it's always me
The one who feels sad?

on the magazine every week
On the last page
Look on the horoscope
It says here,

"this week your boyfriend
Appears to be flirty.
Try not to worry about it
But be optimistic,"

ok so now I'll introduce
The other members
Of the band
On the bass

Keyboard
Nakayama tsutomu

because of you, see
I can't sleep
Hey, if you listen carefully,
You might hear it

the phone ringing at midnight
Must be bad news
It can't be
Be optimistic

(ok everybody sing along!)

a phone call from you
Asking me on a date

I've had enough
Go back to sleep

Overall Meaning

The song begins with the bold statement, "Number five!", which serves as the title of the song. The first verse talks about how the singer feels when they think about their significant other- that something seems off or unfair. Despite being lovers, the singer always feels sad, and their partner is unaware of how they feel. The second verse talks about a horoscope in a magazine that says the singer's partner has been acting flirty lately, advising them not to worry too much but to remain optimistic. The chorus repeats the title phrase, "Number five!", and the bridge introduces the band members, thanking them for their contribution to the song. The final verse talks about how the singer cannot sleep because of their partner, and a phone call from them asking for a date interrupts their much-needed rest.

Holy $#it what a masterpiece. It might even be my favourite P5 album (so hard to choose)! Wow sounds even better than 1996. Konishi sensei is a genius. Timeless. No. It sounds like the future as well as disarmingly nostalgic. All Feelz.
