They are widely credited to have spearheaded the "Shibuya-kei" movement of Tokyo in the 90s, along with Flipper's Guitar.
They are known for their eclectic and energetic compositions, which often sound like "new" releases from the late 1960s hipster scene. Their catchphrase--"A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"--captured the group's ironic stance but eager attitude. The group broke up in March 2001.
A hugely prolific group, Pizzicato Five would release at least an album-per-year along with various EPs and remix albums during their 16 year-career.
Both Nomiya Maki (野宮真貴) and Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) currently enjoy solo careers - with Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) producing other artists ranging from Puffy and SMAP to Cornelius and kahimi karie(カヒミ・カリィ) - alongside collaborative remix compilations - from Ella Fitzgerald and The Supremes to classic Disney and Thunderbirds (as in Super-Marionated) music on his Shibuya-based Readymade Records label.
On Thursday March 31st, 2011, exactly 10 years after Pizzicato Five disbanded, Konishi Yasuharu announced a new solo project called Pizzicato One. The first release, titled One and Ten Very Sad Songs, consists of covers of English songs, each featuring vocals by various internationally-known artists from around the world.

It is raining
A cold rain but
Inside my heart
It feels sunny
(hallelujah)(*)
Discreet clothes
Don't become me
People in the streets
Look back when I pass
The seven o'clock news
Said that
The rain will stop
In the evening
Tonight
Will you be late
Again?
It is raining
A cold rain but
Inside my heart
It feels sunny
(hallelujah)
Leading a discreet life
Does not become me
There's always someone
Calling me
On the phone
The seven o'clock news
Said that
The rain will stop
In the evening
I won't be going
Home
Tonight
A discreet personality
Does not
Become me
I don't read
Difficult
Books
The seven o'clock news
Said that
The rain
Will stop
In the evening
The dog is waiting
At home
The lyrics of Pizzicato Five’s song Rain Song portray a juxtaposition of emotions. While the rain is cold and uncomfortable outside, the singer's heart is filled with sunshine and happiness. The lyrics suggest this heartwarming feeling of joy is thanks to the presence of someone, as depicted in the line “Tonight, will you be late again?”. The song’s focus isn’t just on the singer's emotions, with lines like “People in the streets look back when I pass” and “There's always someone calling me on the phone” suggesting the presence of a larger social circle. The song depicts a picture of a person who is loved by many, but there’s an underlying sense of loneliness portrayed by lines like “A discreet personality does not become me” and “The dog is waiting at home”. The interpretation of the lyrics could be that the presence of a romantic partner is essential, but so is living an engaging social life and having a sense of purpose to avoid being alone.
The interpretation of the lyrics is further compounded by the hallelujah line, which seems to reflect both gratitude and relief. It gives a sense that the singer has been through tough times, and as the rain pours, they have finally found happiness representing the calm after the storm. The songwriting team of nomiya/takanami uses the weather to reflect the emotional state of the singer. It depicts how love and interpersonal relationships can be a source of sunshine and happiness even during difficult times.

Holy $#it what a masterpiece. It might even be my favourite P5 album (so hard to choose)! Wow sounds even better than 1996. Konishi sensei is a genius. Timeless. No. It sounds like the future as well as disarmingly nostalgic. All Feelz.
