They are widely credited to have spearheaded the "Shibuya-kei" movement of Tokyo in the 90s, along with Flipper's Guitar.
They are known for their eclectic and energetic compositions, which often sound like "new" releases from the late 1960s hipster scene. Their catchphrase--"A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"--captured the group's ironic stance but eager attitude. The group broke up in March 2001.
A hugely prolific group, Pizzicato Five would release at least an album-per-year along with various EPs and remix albums during their 16 year-career.
Both Nomiya Maki (野宮真貴) and Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) currently enjoy solo careers - with Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) producing other artists ranging from Puffy and SMAP to Cornelius and kahimi karie(カヒミ・カリィ) - alongside collaborative remix compilations - from Ella Fitzgerald and The Supremes to classic Disney and Thunderbirds (as in Super-Marionated) music on his Shibuya-based Readymade Records label.
On Thursday March 31st, 2011, exactly 10 years after Pizzicato Five disbanded, Konishi Yasuharu announced a new solo project called Pizzicato One. The first release, titled One and Ten Very Sad Songs, consists of covers of English songs, each featuring vocals by various internationally-known artists from around the world.

la la la la my doctor asked me
if this summer
i am going to take a holiday
if i am going anywhere
'i don't care
where you go
as long as you promise me
not to sunbathe'
as a matter of fact
i don't care for sunbathing
but i'll take some days off
i don't care for working
i don't care for staying home either
nor going to the countryside
nor to the beach
i don't care for going anywhere
this summer
i'll just stay in bed
in my hotel room
i'll just vegetate and sleep on
my doctor asked me
on a date
'let's take a ride'
but i don't care for rides
nor do i care for dates
i don't care
for eating out
i don't care
for answering the phone
nor watching telly
nor having to put on make-up
nor brushing my teeth
i don't care for falling in love
i don't care
for doing anything
i'll spend
this summer
vegetating
in my hotel bed
i don't want
to see people
i'll just
vegetate and sleep on
i'll spend
this summer
vegetating
in my hotel bed
waiting for
the room service
i think i'll just
sleep a bit more
i'll spend
this summer
vegetating
in my hotel bed
waiting for
the room service
i think i'll just
sleep a bit more

The lyrics to Pizzicato Five's song "Room Service" seem to reflect the feeling of burnout and listlessness that can come with a long, stressful year of work. The singer talks about how their doctor has advised them to take a break for the summer and go somewhere, but the singer seems to have no desire to go anywhere in particular. They don't want to work, but they don't really want to go out, either. Instead, they plan to spend the whole summer in their hotel room, doing nothing but sleeping and waiting for room service.
The song speaks to a kind of anxietal ennui that many people experience from time to time when they are overworked and overtired. The singer feels disconnected from their life and unable to fully engage with the world around them. Instead, they are content to passively await the arrival of room service, a kind of caring and nurturing force that will bring them food, drink, and other comforts without requiring anything in return.
Overall, "Room Service" can be seen as a commentary on the modern condition of overwork and burnout, and the need for people to sometimes simply disengage from the world and take time to rest and recover.

Holy $#it what a masterpiece. It might even be my favourite P5 album (so hard to choose)! Wow sounds even better than 1996. Konishi sensei is a genius. Timeless. No. It sounds like the future as well as disarmingly nostalgic. All Feelz.
