They are widely credited to have spearheaded the "Shibuya-kei" movement of Tokyo in the 90s, along with Flipper's Guitar.
They are known for their eclectic and energetic compositions, which often sound like "new" releases from the late 1960s hipster scene. Their catchphrase--"A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"--captured the group's ironic stance but eager attitude. The group broke up in March 2001.
A hugely prolific group, Pizzicato Five would release at least an album-per-year along with various EPs and remix albums during their 16 year-career.
Both Nomiya Maki (野宮真貴) and Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) currently enjoy solo careers - with Konishi Yasuharu(小西康陽) producing other artists ranging from Puffy and SMAP to Cornelius and kahimi karie(カヒミ・カリィ) - alongside collaborative remix compilations - from Ella Fitzgerald and The Supremes to classic Disney and Thunderbirds (as in Super-Marionated) music on his Shibuya-based Readymade Records label.
On Thursday March 31st, 2011, exactly 10 years after Pizzicato Five disbanded, Konishi Yasuharu announced a new solo project called Pizzicato One. The first release, titled One and Ten Very Sad Songs, consists of covers of English songs, each featuring vocals by various internationally-known artists from around the world.

I think I'll give a break to love
For as long as it's summer
You know like a cold shower
On all these rumours
As I pass by I salute
The ladies in the sun wearing hats
'g'day, ma'am, how d'you do'
Some hype summer gossip
Spend August shut up indoors
You know have breakfast
In bed
Lemon or milk?
Worried about what is to become of us
Even on telly at seven o'clock news
After those rumours you know
I haven't touched a thing
You know the breakfast
Served in bed
Is still there nobody touched it
Worried about what is to become of us
Even on telly at seven o'clock news
After those rumours you know
I haven't touched a thing
What is to become of us
Some hype gossip
And the two of us always
The song "Seven O'Clock News" by Pizzicato Five is a dreamy pop song that has a bittersweet melody and nostalgic lyrics. The song presents a story about a man who decides to take a break from love during summer and gets caught in various rumors and gossip. The song starts with the man saying that he will take a break from love for as long as summer lasts, which suggests that he wants to pause his love life and enjoy the season. However, as he walks around, he hears all sorts of rumors about him, which he tries to ignore by taking a cold shower.
The song describes a particular lazy summer morning when the man wakes up to breakfast in bed that he hasn't touched yet. There's milk and lemon on the tray, and he wonders about his future and the relationship he's in. The song takes a bitter-sweet turn as the man hears himself being discussed on the news, and he wonders what kind of future he'll have with his love interest amidst all the rumors. The song ends with the line, "What is to become of us, some hype gossip, and the two of us always," which leaves the listener with a sense of melancholy.
Overall, Pizzicato Five's "Seven O'Clock News" is a beautiful song that mixes melancholy and nostalgia with a dreamy pop sound. The song tells a story of a man who is trying to navigate his love life amidst rumors and gossip and reminds us of the fleeting nature of summer romance.

Holy $#it what a masterpiece. It might even be my favourite P5 album (so hard to choose)! Wow sounds even better than 1996. Konishi sensei is a genius. Timeless. No. It sounds like the future as well as disarmingly nostalgic. All Feelz.
