The First Noel
Plácido Domingo & Vienna Symphony Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first Noel the angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds
In fields as they lay,
In fields where they,
Laying their sheep
On a cold winter's night
That was so deep.
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star
Three wise men came from country far,
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star
Wherever it went.

Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Overall Meaning

The song, The First Noel, tells the story of the night when Jesus Christ was born. It starts with the angels announcing the birth of the King of Israel to some poor shepherds who were tending their sheep in a field. The shepherds looked up and saw a bright star shining in the sky that guided them to the location of where the baby was born. They joined the people who had gathered around the baby, marveling at the miracle of His birth. The chorus of "Noel Noel Noel Noel! Born is the King of Israel!" is a proclamation of the good news that the King of Israel had been born.

The second verse talks about the three wise men who also saw the star and followed it to the location of the baby's birth. They traveled from a faraway country, driven by their curiosity to see this King who was born. The chorus repeats again, reminding us that what we celebrate at Christmas is the birth of the King of Israel. The song speaks of the joy that comes with the birth of Christ and how, for centuries, people have celebrated this joyous event. The melody and instrumentation evoke feelings of wonder, awe, and hope, fitting for the occasion.
