1) Placebo is a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 by vocalist-guitarist Brian Molko and bassist-guitarist Stefan Olsdal. Drummer Robert Schultzberg joined in late 1994 but left in 1996 shortly after the release of the band's eponymous debut album due to conflicts with Molko. He was replaced the same year by Steve Hewitt. Molko was born in Belgium, and Olsdal and Schultzberg were born in Sweden. Remaining members Molko and Olsdal both grew up in Luxembourg before separately relocating to London and are both British citizens.
Following the release of a demo, a split single, and their eponymous debut album, Placebo gained exposure in 1997 after the single "Nancy Boy" became popular in the UK, a song notorious at the time for its gender-bending content. The band stood out among the Britpop scene they were associated with at the time for their androgynous appearance and musical content, as well as Molko's distinctive voice and lyrics which openly discussed sexuality, mental health, and drug use.
Hewitt left Placebo in 2007 due to personal and musical differences. He was replaced the following year by Steve Forrest. Placebo released two albums with Forrest, who left in 2015 to pursue his own musical career. Since 2015, Placebo has been officially a duo, though augmented with additional musicians.
Placebo has collaborated with various artists over the years, including David Bowie, Justin Warfield, Michael Stipe, and Alison Mosshart. To date, Placebo has released eight studio albums, all of which have reached the Top 20 in the United Kingdom, and have sold around 14 million records worldwide.

The Never-Ending Why
Placebo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The fragile kingdom fall
The tremor becomes a quake
There's a body in the lake
And as the two of us rebel
Damn you all to hell
I wonder if that's all there is
Time will help you through
But it doesn't have the time
To give you all the answers to the never-ending why
The sound of silence grows
As spiders kissing fly
And the tumor becomes a rhyme
But the kids are doing fine
And as the two of us rebel
And damn you all to hell
I wonder if that's all there is
Time will help you through
But it doesn't have the time
To give you all the answers to the never-ending why
The lyrics to Placebo's song The Never-Ending Why convey a sense of impending doom, the fragility of existence, and the search for answers in a world that is constantly changing. The first stanza uses metaphors to suggest the breakdown of order and the inevitability of decay. The atom imploding and the kingdom falling represent the dissolution of structures that we take for granted, while the body in the lake symbolizes the darkness and destruction that lurks just beneath the surface. The lines "as the two of us rebel / damn you all to hell" suggest a defiant attitude in the face of this chaos, but also a sense of futility; "I wonder if that's all there is" implies resignation to the idea that there may never be a satisfactory explanation for the complexities of life.
The second stanza continues the theme of decay and uncertainty, using more vivid and disturbing imagery. The sound of silence growing and spiders kissing fly are both surreal and unsettling, while the "tumor becoming a rhyme" is a clever and ominous play on words. Yet amidst this chaos, there is a glimmer of hope: "the kids are doing fine." This may suggest that even in the face of an uncertain future, there is still the possibility for new life and growth. The final lines, with their repetition of "time will help you through," acknowledge the inevitability of change and the need to adapt, while also recognizing that there may never be a clear answer to the question of why things happen as they do.
