1) Placebo is a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 by vocalist-guitarist Brian Molko and bassist-guitarist Stefan Olsdal. Drummer Robert Schultzberg joined in late 1994 but left in 1996 shortly after the release of the band's eponymous debut album due to conflicts with Molko. He was replaced the same year by Steve Hewitt. Molko was born in Belgium, and Olsdal and Schultzberg were born in Sweden. Remaining members Molko and Olsdal both grew up in Luxembourg before separately relocating to London and are both British citizens.
Following the release of a demo, a split single, and their eponymous debut album, Placebo gained exposure in 1997 after the single "Nancy Boy" became popular in the UK, a song notorious at the time for its gender-bending content. The band stood out among the Britpop scene they were associated with at the time for their androgynous appearance and musical content, as well as Molko's distinctive voice and lyrics which openly discussed sexuality, mental health, and drug use.
Hewitt left Placebo in 2007 due to personal and musical differences. He was replaced the following year by Steve Forrest. Placebo released two albums with Forrest, who left in 2015 to pursue his own musical career. Since 2015, Placebo has been officially a duo, though augmented with additional musicians.
Placebo has collaborated with various artists over the years, including David Bowie, Justin Warfield, Michael Stipe, and Alison Mosshart. To date, Placebo has released eight studio albums, all of which have reached the Top 20 in the United Kingdom, and have sold around 14 million records worldwide.

Crushed by the way that you cry
Cue to your face so forsaken
What a surprise
[Chorus]
You try to break the mould
Before you get too old
Before you die
Cue to your heart that it racing
Stung by the look in your eye
Cue to your heart that is racing
What a surprise
[Chorus]
Cue to your face so forsaken
Crushed by the way that you cry
Cue to your face so forsaken
Say goodbye
Sing for your lover
Like blood from a stone
Sing for your lover
Who's waiting at home
If you sing when you're high
And you're dry as a bone
Then you must realize
That you're never alone
And you'll sing with the dead instead
[Chorus]
The song "Summer's Gone" by Placebo appears to be about introspection and reflection on one's own mortality. The lyrics speak of a person who is trying to "break the mold" before they get too old and die. This is likely a metaphor for living life to the fullest and not being constrained by societal expectations or the fear of death. The chorus reinforces this message by urging the listener to try to break free of these constraints before it's too late.
The repeated cue to the face and heart that are forsaken and racing respectively, suggests an overwhelming feeling of despair and anxiety over the passing of time. The line "Sing for your lover like blood from a stone", appears to be a metaphor for one's own creative expression, which can be hard to wring out when inspiration is limited, but can be cathartic once it flows. The mention of the dead towards the outro, maybe a reference to the notion that we all eventually join them and the only way to live forever is through one's art or legacy. Overall, the song speaks to the fleeting nature of life and encourages listeners to seize the day and live life to the fullest before it's too late.

I was 22 when I bought Placebo’s album Without You I’m Nothing. That was 21 years ago now. At the time, the album spoke to the inner turmoil I was going through in finding myself in the world, just finishing up university. It has lost none of its brilliance in the intervening two decades. Still sound as fresh and as relevant as it did when I first listened to it back in 1998. Easily up there with the finest albums of a decade of truly great music.
