Hate
Plain With T'S Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love love, love love love love

You were everything I wanted
You were everything a girl could be
Then you left me broken hearted
Now you don't mean a thing to me

All I wanted was your
Love love, love love love love

Hate is a strong word
But I really, really, really don't like you
Now that it's over
I don't even know what I liked about you

Brought you around and you just brought me down
Hate is a strong word
But I really, really, really don't like you
I really don't like you

Thought that everything was perfect
Isn't that how it's supposed to be?
Thought you thought that I was worth it
Now I think a little differently

All I wanted was your
Love love, love love love love

Hate is a strong word
But I really, really, really don't like you
Now that it's over
I don't even know what I liked about you

Brought you around and you just brought me down
Hate is a strong word
But I really, really, really don't like you

Now that it's over you can't hurt me
Now that it's over you can't bring me down

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh
All I wanted was your
Love love, love love love love

Hate is a strong word
But I really, really, really don't like you
Now that it's over
I don't even know what I liked about you

Brought you around and you just brought me down
Hate is a strong word
But I really, really, really don't like you

(Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh)
I really don't like you
(Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh)
I really don't like you
(Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh)

I really don't like you
(Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh)

Overall Meaning

In "Hate," Plain White T's' vocalist Tom Higgenson sings about a broken relationship and how he now dislikes the girl who was once everything he wanted. He admits that hate is a strong word, but he really doesn't like her. In the beginning, the girl was everything he wanted and everything a girl could be. However, things took a drastic turn, and now she's out of his life, leaving him heartbroken.

Hate is a strong word, but Higgenson communicates that he doesn't like the girl because she brought him down. He's thankful that he no longer has to deal with her negativity now that the relationship has ended. In the last verse, he sings that he doesn't even know what he liked about her in the first place.

The song's chorus is straightforward and memorable, featuring the repeated lyrics "All I wanted was your love love love love love" and "Hate is a strong word, but I really, really, really don't like you." The song's catchy chorus and relatable lyrics made it popular and beloved.

That's cool, but don't make that a defining characteristic of yourself.

Trying to be a special snowflake usually looks cringeworthy(I'm not implying that you are, just in case) .

The problem with people listening to music of "older generstions" is that populat music was for mass consumption for a looong time. I won't deny that 70s music usually sounds better than modern music, but pop of 80s was already a refurbished, mass produced thing only interrupted by grunge in 90s, but then replaced by refurbished pop and hip-hop( a lot of hiphop from 90s is still authentic though )

Noe, sorry for writing an essay so long you won't read, but the point is, age of the music you're listening doesn't matter as long as it's good.

I enjoy good stuff that was released this year just as I do the classics from 50s and 70s.
