First appearing in 1993 in Rio de Janeiro, with politically charged lyrics about marijuana legalization, they started playing concerts in Rio de Janeiro and other capitals, such as Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Curitiba.
Planet Hemp began attracting mainstream attention due to the violent outbreaks which were common during their concerts. In 1994 Skunk, one of the original band members passed away, interrupting Planet Hemp's career for some time, but after B Negão joined the group they signed a contract with Sony Music, releasing "Usuário" in 1995.
The album turned the band into an icon of the 90s Brazilian rock, with successful hits such as "Mantenha o Respeito", "Legalize Já", "Fazendo a Cabeça" and the controversial "Porcos Fardados" (Pigs in Uniform), a critique of the police brutality.
Because of their commitment and lyrics towards the legalization of marijuana, Planet Hemp has had issues with the Brazilian authorities. This tension has lead to apprehended records, cancelled concerts and prison warrants (in Brazil it is illegal to promote/defend the use of prohibited substances, including but not limited to weed).
The band ended in 2001, due to internal conflicts regarding Marcelo D2 solo career.

Caralho mermão, esse bagulho é muito bom
Porra, vale umas 30g porra
Muita maconha maluco, um baseado atrás do outro cara
"Skunk" is a song by Brazilian rap rock group Planet Hemp. The lyrics talk about the singer's love for marijuana, specifically the strain "skunk." The first line of the song, "Caralho mermão, esse bagulho é muito bom," roughly translates to "Wow man, this stuff is really good." The song goes on to describe how the singer smokes joint after joint of skunk, repeatedly declaring his love for the drug. The song provides a window into the world of one who is heavily invested in the drug culture and helps to bring awareness around the drug usage issues and its repercussions on the health of the individuals consuming it. The song's lyrics also highlight the illegal nature of marijuana in Brazil and the South American region.
One interesting fact about "Skunk" is that it was one of the biggest hits for Planet Hemp, reaching #1 on Brazilian music charts in the late 1990s. The song, and the group's music in general, sparked controversy in Brazil due to its frank depictions of drug use and advocacy for marijuana legalization. The band's lead singer, Marcelo D2, has been an outspoken advocate for drug policy reform and was actually arrested in 1997 for possession of marijuana.
Another interesting fact about "Skunk" is that the song was included on the soundtrack for the popular Brazilian TV show, "Malhação" (Workout) in 1998. The song's inclusion on the soundtrack helped to further elevate Planet Hemp's profile in Brazil and cemented the band's place in Brazilian music history. In addition to "Skunk," Planet Hemp also had other hits such as "Legalize Já" and "Mantenha o Respeito."

Meu som favorito do Planet Hemp, essa jam podia ter saído fácil do Check Your Head e a vibe lembra muito o Centro do Rio de Janeiro... a banda podia ter lançado um album ou EP todo nessa pegada como foi o The In Sound From Way Out! ou o Mix Up dos Beastie Boys !
