Turn It Up
Plant Robert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On Charley Patton highway
The mist, the rain, the mud
Somewhere east of Tunica
And I'm close to giving up
My car goes round in circles
The road remains the same
For help and consolation
I'll turn it on again
Turn it up
Turn it up

Alone with disconnection
And not a lonesome word
I reach out to the radio
And the clinically disturbed
"Give it up," the man says
Surrender and be saved
He'll drive away your demons
His help is on the way

Turn it up
Oh turn it up!
Ah, ah, ah, ah

I'm lost inside America
And I'm turning inside out
I'm turning into someone else
I heard so much about
I'm blinded by the neon
The righteous and the might

I'm stuck inside the radio
Turn it on and let me out

A touch of serendipity
A little stroke of luck
The radio inside this car
Brings guidance from above
The smallest contribution
Will keep me in safe hands
I'm calling 1-800
I ain't leaving it to chance

Turn it up
Turn it up
Ah, ah (Turn it up) (Ah)

Turning into someone else
I heard so much about

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Turn It Up" by Robert Plant primarily focus on being lost and disconnected but finding solace in the guidance of a radio broadcast. The song starts on Charley Patton highway with the singer encountering unfavorable driving conditions, feeling helpless and close to giving up. He describes going in circles while the road remains the same, seeking help and consolation in the radio. The singer is alone and disconnected, seeking comfort from the words of a clinically disturbed man on the radio who he believes can drive away the demons within him.

As he gets lost inside America, turning into someone else he’d heard so much about, he is blinded by the neon and righteousness around him. The singer feels trapped inside the radio, seeking guidance to get out of it. He is lucky to come across the radio inside the car, which he believes brings guidance from above. The smallest contribution will keep him in safe hands and he is calling the hotline (1-800) to ensure his safety. The song ends with the singer turning into someone else he had heard so much about.

"Turn It Up" is all about the feelings of being lost and seeking direction, and Robert Plant uses visceral imagery to create a sense of place that is both foreign and familiar. The radio serves as a metaphor for hope and direction when all seems lost, and Plant’s lyrics perfectly express this sense of desperation and hopefulness.

Reminder :
PROCLAMATION OF THE FIRST DIRECT DEMOCRACY OF FRANCE, JULY 14, 2019 IN PARIS

The people have the natural right to form or abolish any government for the purpose of ensuring their own security and sustainability.
On this July 14, 2019, National Day, We, the people of France, once again declare our inalienable sovereignty.
With constancy and obstinacy, the people of France, with or without a vest, denounced the corruption of the republic and the illegitimacy of this false representative democracy.
Access to information, induced by the advent of modern communication technologies, allowed us to make a lucid observation of the uselessness and even of the harmful character of the political representation set up as a system, almost always concussionnary, subservient to the big world bank and the military-industrial complex which enslave the peoples of the whole world.
Everyone has the right to speak for themselves. Collective decision-making through citizen structures freed from the republican yoke can now be achieved.
We hereby declare that we have the right to do so in every corner of France, in our districts, our municipalities, our cities and our provinces.
In order to restore the destiny and sovereignty of the French people, we hereby proclaim the first direct democracy in France and we invite all the citizens of France who love justice and freedom to meet in constituent assemblies, new institutions which will see the light of day soon in each province of France. Everyone can thus bring their own skills and expertise to the established democratic structure in order to determine together the rules of our mutual ties.

We will not go back.

National Council of Vests meeting in Paris, July 14, 2019Rappel :

Drumming the masses to Nirvana. "Serendipity" is the magical formula of love. As a child I turned up the shortwave radio which brought me to Hamburg to hear the new music from the Beatles. If we dream of far away places then maybe we can turn on the radio and hear Robert Plant take us there. This vinyl has no rival so treasure this music as the sum total of a "Magical Mystery Tour ". Be my muse and I will be yours. I would like to see Kashmir through your eyes of mystic blue.
