Mathieu Gendreau (electronics) & Pieter Van Dessel (vocals / electronics) are Plastic Operator. Respectively hailing from Montreal and Antwerp, the pair met at London's Westminster University in 2001 where they were both studying audio production. Bonding over a shared love of two decades of fine electronic and indie music the pair began to make sweet music together. When the course finished Pieter returned to Antwerp to work on sound design for film and play in a few bands, and Mathieu remained in London to work as a sound engineer and record producer, working with a broad cross-section of the UK's musical talent. The pair kept up their collaborative efforts over the internet, meeting face to face in either London or Antwerp once a month.
In 2004, their efforts came to fruition when then the pair released their debut three track CD through a handful of record shops, with Rough Trade making it their CD of the week. Once the tracks were out there in the public domain, things accelerated at a pace no-one could have predicted. The lead track from the CD, 'Folder', had been posted on a web blog, and within weeks Plastic Operator were receiving emails from fans in New York, Mexico City and Bangkok enquiring about the group. Radio stations as far apart as California, New Zealand and Tijuana began championing the song. In London Radio 1's Rob Da Bank began playing the track on his Blue Room show, eventually signing the track to his Sunday Best label.
Plastic Operator released their debut album "Different Places" in 2007. Their second album "Before The Day Is Out" came out on 02/02/2012 on Fine Day Records in Europe/USA and on P-Vine records in Japan.

Plastic Operator Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The two of us together
I will read the news
You'll predict the weather
We bring all the news
And headlines we can gather
I give interviews
I can hear you
Singing along in another space
All your stories
Show up and leave me without a trace
Radio telescopes
Look toward the heavens
At giant clouds of gas
Stars and dust and gravel baby
I'll follow you 'til we hit the ground
Then we turn around
And we rise together
And we'll never guess what is coming next
But my first reflex
Leads to beats and radio
I can hear you
Singing along in another space
All your stories
Show up and leave me without a trace
Signals come down
Now set up your receivers
If reception's fine
You will never leave it
I will settle down at a certain age
But until this day
I live in different places
Always trying to make you want to stay
Cancel every space train
As long as we get along I'll follow you
I can hear you
Singing along in another space
All your stories
Show up and leave me without a trace
The lyrics of "Radio" by Plastic Operator portray a story of two individuals who collaborate in producing a radio show. The first stanza states, "We make radio, the two of us together. I will read the news, you'll predict the weather." The two characters are described as offering a complete range of the news, interviews, weather prediction, and stories. The verse also refers to radio telescopes looking to the skies to receive signals, making a connection between the listeners of the radio show and the heavens.
The second stanza appreciates the chemistry between the two creators, with every story they tell making them more aware of how much they need each other, and how much they love the work they have both created. The lyrics suggest that the stories leave the singer without a trace, which could imply a kind of melancholy or sadness from the realization that their stories are being told, but as soon as they are over, the tales go into oblivion. The lyrics express their understanding of each other's spaces, histories, and rhythms in a connection that goes beyond physical space.
Overall, the song is a metaphor for the connectedness and unity that radio and human creativity bring to the world. The radio show is a story and a discussion about the universe that surrounds us, bringing people closer despite distance and differences.
