Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The song "真っ赤な糸" by Plastic Tree is a melancholic ballad that talks about a love that has ended. The lyrics are filled with imagery that describes the devastation of a typhoon that is metaphorical of the emotional turmoil that the singer is going through. The first verse sets the scene with the image of a typhoon approaching in the glass sky, and the wind is so strong that it becomes a reason for the two people to laugh. The second line talks about the singer losing his vision in the blinding light, and when he closes his eyes, he can feel something spilling over. The chorus explains that the lovers' bright red strings of fate have come undone, and the magic that once bound them together has dissipated. The singer wonders if he can walk ahead on his own.
The second verse talks about the world coming back to life as the glass sky shatters, and everything else seems to be blown away. The singer expresses his regret over all the things that he didn't get a chance to say to his lover, and if there were a chance to be reborn, he would want to become someone that his lover would love. The bridge of the song takes a poetic turn as the singer talks about calling out the name of his lover, like a magical incantation, and how he will never forget her voice, her face, and her heart.
