Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The lyrics of Plastic Tree’s song Cream talk about the personal struggles and the feelings of the song’s protagonist. The lyrics describe the singer and his pet turtle’s existence within the confines of the singer’s room. The turtle continues to flap its wings, while the singer lays on the collapsed chair beside a closed window, laughing at himself while feeling peculiar.
The night grows darker, and the singer experiences a feeling of anxiety that gradually increases as the night goes on. He is visited by someone who sings a bright song in front of him, but it only makes him feel even more emotionally exhausted. He repeats the same words over and over again, and he thinks that the singer is trying to press him down in the same way the world is.
The singer describes his world as a box that cannot be opened, while someone outside of it is staring. It paints a picture of a person feeling trapped in their own mind, unable to escape their own thoughts and struggles. The song's meaning, therefore, revolves around themes of anxiety, depression, and escapism.
