Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The lyrics to Plastic Tree's song "Irogoto" convey a sense of longing and desire for closeness with another person, while also acknowledging the pains and difficulties that can come with emotional attachment. The song begins with the repetition of "kisu wo shite" (kiss me), suggesting a desire for physical intimacy. However, despite the desire for closeness, the lyrics also express a sense of distance and separation ("soredemo kimi wa tooku tte"), as well as a fear of vulnerability and pain ("kizu tsukete kizu tsukete / sore wa tabun itai koto"). The lines "aimai ni nante shinaide / soba ni ite soba ni ite / tatoe chikaenakutemo" suggest a desire for emotional clarity and honesty, yet also a recognition that this can be difficult to achieve.
As the song progresses, the imagery becomes more surreal and dreamlike, with references to melting fruit ("amai kajitsu nara futari tokeru dake") and falling flowers ("hana ga ochitekite marude naiteite"). The final section of the song, with its repetition of "zutto waratte waratte" (keep laughing), offers a sense of hope and endurance in the face of uncertainty and pain.
Overall, "Irogoto" is a poignant expression of the complexities of human relationships, and the ways in which desire and fear can intertwine.
