Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The first two lines of the song talk about a blue umbrella flower shutting, and the sky not being artificial after the rain stopped. The singer describes how everything around him is wonderful. He then proceeds to talk about how when a summer storm hits, and it is accompanied by the sound of cicadas, his body temperature rises. The chorus talks about his “Light Blue Girlfriend” and how it feels like it could be just him and her in the world. The singer describes how he feels when he is with his girlfriend, using words such as “sparkle” and “shimmer,” as he seems to be basking in every moment with her. He then talks about how his girlfriend nonchalantly drops the bomb on him that she loves him, causing him to be taken aback. He expresses that despite the fact that he may look calm, he is actually not. He then talks about how his tears mix with droplets of water and blur together, but the girl is the one who does not give it away easily. The song ends with him saying that when he is with his “Light Blue Girlfriend,” it would be perfect if everything was just as he desires.
One interesting fact about the song is that it is a collaboration between the band Plastic Tree and the director of the anime "Shaman King" whose name is Kuroda Chiaki. The song was created for the theme song of the Japanese version of the anime. Another fact about the song is that it was released in 2003 as a double A-side single with the song "Ghost," which was also used as an anime opening. The lead singer of the band, Ryutaro Arimura, wrote the lyrics for the song, and it was composed by the band's guitarist Akira Nakayama. The song was a commercial success, as it peaked at #6 on the Oricon weekly singles chart. It was also used as an ending theme for the anime "Shaman King" and the video game "Musou Orochi." The song was covered by various artists, including the popular boy band NEWS. Another interesting fact is that the music video for the song features the members of the band playing instruments in a dark garage as animations of the characters from the "Shaman King" anime are projected onto the walls.
