Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The lyrics to Plastic Tree's song "Planetarium" are reflective and melancholic, exploring themes of loneliness and vulnerability. The opening lines describe a pain that is locked inside the singer, which they have sealed away. The singer hears a voice whispering above them in the night sky, but it seems to be out of reach. Looking up, the singer sees shooting stars polishing the darkness before them. It dawns on them that the reason they cry is at last understood.
The second verse echoes the first, with the singer asking where they can go when they have nothing left. They find themselves drowning in tears that don't seem to stop. The chorus repeats the theme of being locked up, with the singer acknowledging the beauty of memories, even as they hurt like no other pain. The song's final line is a repetition of the opening question, asking what the singer must lock away to protect themselves forever.
Overall, the song paints a poignant picture through its introspective and often sad lyrics. The singer ponders the meaning of their tears and the beauty of memories, all while feeling trapped and alone.
