Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

In Plastic Tree's song Rocket, the singer dreams the same dream every day and is only able to sleep for two hours. The sound of the alarm ringing in his chest wakes him up, so he decides to take a walk in the park. Despite his lack of religious beliefs, he prays for hope in the sky's blue, but feels like he is too far away from it. He attributes his body's agitation to the heat, which reminds him of his passion for someone else. He wishes to close his eyes and fly up to the sky to leave behind his desires and instead bask in the light at the top.
The second verse starts by describing a flock of crows that resemble a musical score of a wire. Then, the singer sings a melody alone that fades with the wind. He has a lot of unsaid words in his heart, but they will eventually overflow even without his voice. He then compares his climb to the skies to the crowd of crows that surround him. He attributes the tightening feeling in his chest to the heat of his passion again, and he wishes to go back to his cocoon in the summer heat.
The last verse describes the singer's realization that no matter how far he rises, his passion still grips him. He wishes to leave his passion behind and fly toward the sky, but he considers if the person he desires can still see him from the end of the universe. The song then concludes with the singer opening his eyes to find himself in a faded world. However, he sees hope in the return of the sky's blue color.
