Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The lyrics of Plastic Tree's song "shoujo kyousou" reflect the chaotic and fragmented world of a teenage girl who seems to be on the brink of madness. The opening lines describe her writing meaningless things and singing as if insane. The next lines depict her playing the violin poorly and struggling to make a decent sound. She feels like her bones are clunky, and she cannot make a good note. Nevertheless, she is determined to keep playing and does not mind her failures.
As we move on, we realize that the girl is sitting under a table while staring at a TV and checking various things. She sings about an old song her pocket used to sing, which consoles her. She eats biscuits, knowing that she needs to maintain her strength. She feels she is not inadequate but does not understand why she cannot feel her hands or why she laughs uncontrollably.
Towards the end, the song repeats the notion that the girl is underneath the table watching the TV and checking things out. The repeated "barabara ni chirabatte" (scattering), underscores her scattered state of mind. The song ends with her laughing, perhaps a sign of her surrender to her current state's incoherence.
Overall, the song represents the fragmented mind of a teenage girl struggling with identity, sanity and feels like a misfit in society.
