The band originally consisted of Mark Holmes from Mansfield, England on vocals and bass, Sergio Galli on guitar and Chris Steffler on drums. Scottish musician Kenny MacLean later joined the group as the bassist. The name of the band was inspired by the 1931 Jean Harlow movie Platinum Blonde. They were known also for their stylish glam rock-like appearance.

The band re-united in 2010 and will be releasing a new album in 2012.

Platinum Blonde was inducted into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame on March 12, 2010.

History

Platinum Blonde originated in 1983 as a tribute band performing the music of The Police in Canada's university and club circuit. In 1983, they signed to CBS Records Canada and released a self-titled six-song EP, which made it to No. 39 on the Canadian album charts. It was quickly expanded into a full length album titled Standing in the Dark, which featured identical artwork to the EP.

The band's popularity on the airwaves in Canada led to a triple platinum (300,000) album, featuring four hits including two Juno Award nominations: "Standing in the Dark" and "It Doesn't Really Matter". Their music videos were placed into high rotation on the newly created MuchMusic, Canada's national music video network.

In 1985, the band released a second album called Alien Shores, featuring the addition of a fourth member, Kenny MacLean. "Alien Shores" went quintuple platinum (500,000), the group's high-water mark of success. Hits from the second album included "Situation Critical", "Crying Over You", "Somebody Somewhere", and "Hungry Eyes".

In 1988 the band's next album, Contact, was a hit in Canada, going double platinum, but was significantly less successful than their previous record. The title track "Contact" was a modest hit, but the album was an overall commercial disappointment, and they were dropped by CBS. Platinum Blonde changed their name to The Blondes and recorded and released one further album to minimal attention before disbanding.

The entire group appeared as alien bikers in the 1988 episode Eye for an Eye of the television series War of the Worlds.

In 2002, Mark Holmes opened the internationally renowned The Mod Club Theatre on College Street in Toronto's Little Italy. The Mod Club Theatre has showcased the likes of Muse, Amy Winehouse, MGMT, The Killers, The Ruby Spirit, Keane, Feist, Mobile and more.

Rumors of a reunion of the original band, and possibly some new material, continued to swirl, as the band played a few charity concerts in the mid-2000s. A DVD video compilation entitled Platinum Blonde: The Complete DVD Collection is in production. According to the band's official website, the compilation consists of nine music videos as well as several bonus features.

Bassist Kenny MacLean was found dead on November 24, 2008 in his recording studio on Yonge Street in Toronto. He had just released his third solo CD entitled Completely at Toronto's Mod Club on Friday November 21, passing away that night after the show of heart failure.

Present and future plans

On March 10, 2010, Platinum Blonde played their first reunion show at The Mod Club Theatre in Toronto, Ontario. The original line up of Mark Holmes, Sergio Galli & Chris Steffler were inducted into the Radio and Television Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. The next day, the band announced on MuchMusic that a reunion is in the works with a new recording and show dates.

On December 6, 2010, an EP containing a cover of the song "Not in Love" was released by the Canadian electronic band Crystal Castles featuring the vocals of UK singer Robert Smith (The Cure) on the Fiction Records label.

In June 2012, Platinum Blonde released a new single "Beautiful" on iTunes and announced a full new album would also be released. The band is currently touring in 2012 to promote their latest material.

Overall Meaning

I absolutely love both versions - each has it's own vibe and energy to it. I was 11 when this original came out and loved it then. I grew up, got into The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths etc. then years later when the CC/Robert Smith version came out I nearly peed in my pants because I remembered the original and how much I loved it and freaked out over how absolutely f**king amazing the CC/Robert Smith cover was. That's the true litmus test of a fantastic pop song - it stays relevant over decades, still has an amazing hook and when it's covered, it open to some truly great interpretations.

I was driving home yesterday and the Robert Smith Crystal Castles version was aired on 98.5 CKWR-FM, a radio station out of Waterloo, ON. I emailed the station to find out what song it was, did a little digging to find this version is the original by Platinum Blonde. Good old 80's vibes all around. It’s hard to say if this version or the CC cover is better. The original feels much more triumphant in a way, making a proud statement that you’ve moved on with your life. The cover feels much colder, darker, and like you’re trying to convince yourself that you’ve moved on when you know that you haven’t. Both are excellent.

I loved and even covered the song having only heard of the CC version, but I'm glad someone told me it was a cover, because the original is fantastic and now I'm hugely into Platinum Blonde as well. Even though it was a little before my time (Gen Y), I'm crazy about the New Wave sound and this has got to be one of the greatest ballads from that whole movement. And I still adore CC's gloomy, bleak version, invoking smoke stains on the cracked white paint of an empty home. It's okay to love both.

Yes that’s something they didn’t get appreciated on was Sergio Gallis guitar style and the way he muted strings and other things like that. Platinum blonde deserved more recognition but still was very recognized in Canada.

Great songwriting. I am going to refrain from comparing versions only to say they are all good for different reasons. It is hard to create a listenable version while changing so much, so Crystal Castles gets big props for that. PB gets big props for writing and arranging it in the first place. The Crystal Castles version without Robert Smith (and I love The Cure) is harder to find (not even on iTunes) but worth the search.

My sister had this album (cassette) back when it first came out (I was five), and I played it non-stop for a while! It's a solid, solid offering - especially given it's a debut!! Always loved this song, and was so happy to see it get a new life after the Crystal Castles/Robert Smith cover (amazingly done by the way), but the original still has that edge! Great tune.

This was part of the all girl band explosion of the 80's: the Bangals, BananaRama and others. This was before the Spice Girls. So little girls could look up to Platinum Blonde as inspiration, and young boys could dream about marrying them, settling down and raising kids with them. I was so surprised that Crystal Castles actually just covered that song. I first heard the song on an older FIFA game, then I went to look at the Crystal Castles and now I am here. This version is quite amazing too, I like the guitar in it and that 80s feel to it fits so well.

Heard a cover of this on CC's second album, though 'wow that's a good song', then I heard their cover of that with robert Smith and thought 'fuck that's an amazing song', then heard this and I'm so fucking torn between the two!! ARG!! it's so tough!!
