Happiness
Platinum Weird Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can turn the gray more blue
Give me a chance and I?ll show you
How to go from good to bad to worse

And then you'll see my greatest gift
Is falling down and taking it
'Cause everything is better when it hurts
Happiness in all kinds of weather
For worse or for better
I?ll have it anyway

But happiness, it can't last forever
You know there's never
Pleasure without the pain

Here it comes again
Here it comes again
Happiness

I used to dream of oceans wide
Somewhere in another life
I am floating far from everything

And I need someone to pull me back
From the edge of where I'm at
'Cause if I hit the bottom
One more time I?ll never find

Happiness in all kinds of weather
For worse or for better
I?ll have it anyway

Happiness, it can't last forever
You know there's never
Pleasure without the pain

Here it comes again
Here it comes again

Happiness, happiness
Happiness, happiness

Overall Meaning

The opening line of Platinum Weird's "Happiness" sets the stage for a song that touches on the often-complicated nature of the search for happiness. The singer notes that they can "turn the gray more blue," implying a sort of magical or transformative ability to improve their own life and the lives of those around them. But there's a dark twist: they also suggest that the journey from "good to bad to worse" is one that they're intimately familiar with, and that they're good at experiencing pain and suffering ("my greatest gift / Is falling down and taking it"). This sets the stage for a chorus that speaks to the paradox of happiness: "Happiness in all kinds of weather / For worse or for better / I'll have it anyway / But happiness, it can't last forever / You know there's never / Pleasure without the pain."

The second verse introduces a dreamlike quality to the song, with the suggestion that the singer is imagining a happier, more idyllic life for themselves. They envision an "ocean wide" in another life where they're "floating far from everything," but their present reality is much more bleak. They seem to be in danger of hitting "the bottom" one more time, which implies a history of depression, addiction, or other difficulties. But despite that, the chorus rings out an affirmation that happiness is still within reach, even if it's a fleeting joy that's "gone again" as quickly as it arrives.

Overall, "Happiness" seems to be a meditation on the nature of happiness: how it comes and goes, how it's often paired with sorrow and pain, and how the pursuit of it is a journey that can lead us through dark places we'd rather not visit. Despite all that, the song offers a sort of resilience and hopefulness, suggesting that it's worth continuing to seek out moments of joy and contentment whenever they arise.

After all these years this song still rings strong in my ears. Will never get old. So amazing and original. This band should have received more publicity. Their music is so well made its ahead of it's time.

Her music reminds me alot of Sheryl Crowe. I love the electro-beats at the beginning. Very righteous, guys. Cant wait for the new album.

Love this Peter Max-ish 60s style animation. Kara looks gorgeous and is singing her butt off!! Fun tune, great video. Well written, performed and filmed. Love it! The Beatle vibe is particularly cool!

The version of Happiness currently on iTunes is a "74" recording of this song. In other words, it is Kara singing but with the help of a lower key as well as a good amount of technology, it sounds completely unlike her. As of right now, there is no way to get "Happiness" in this key and without the studio changes on iTunes. Hope this helps!

They have an album called "Make Believe" out on iTunes -- they recorded it as if it were from the 1970s, and Kara sings as a character called Erin Grace. There are also two Platinum Weird songs on iTunes where Kara sings as herself: "Taking Chances" and "Will You Be Around."
