Drifting
Plumb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a sea of lonely swimming sad
Looking just for an arm to grab
I don't need to understand
I'm just lending you the two that I have

[Chorus]
You might be drifting
And can't find the shore
So hopeless and all alone
The waves are crashing all around you
Just when you've lost the will to live
You see the sun

Can we make a searchlight
From all the bridges that we burn?
Do you see a rescue?
Or a deeper kind of hurt?

Who could love you,
Who could hold you?
I'd swim across the sea
You don't have to be alone
Where the shallow gets so deep

[Chorus]

I am hurt and nearly drown
(Open up your eyes)
I cry for help you turned around
(Open up your eyes)
Farther from the shore
Or you'll be farther from the shore

I am hurt and nearly drown
(You're not alone)
I cry for help you turned around
(I'm not letting go)
Farther from the shore
So you're not farther from the shore

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song Drifting by Plumb is a beautifully written piece that speaks to the feelings of loneliness and hopelessness. The verse talks about the sea of people who are swimming in loneliness and searching for someone to reach out to them. The singer is ready to stand by them despite not fully understanding their pain. The chorus depicts a picture of someone who has lost all hope, and is adrift in the sea. They cannot find the shore, and they feel all alone. The waves are crashing around, and they feel lost. However, just when they've lost the will to live, they see the sun. The second verse describes the singer's desire to help the person in need. They want to create a searchlight by burning bridges, a way to find a deeper rescue or understanding to heal any hurts. The bridge of the song has a repetition of the phrase "farther from the shore", which indicates how the person is moving away from safety and towards danger. The chorus is repeated to drive the message of hope and helplessness.

The song is a perfect representation of how we all feel at some point in our lives. It's human nature to feel alone and hopeless when faced with difficult situations. Still, we can learn that we don't have to struggle alone, and there is always hope even when we think there isn't. The song speaks to the power of the human spirit, which can rise above dire circumstances even when it feels overwhelmed. We need to lean on people we trust and know will be there for us, even if we don't fully understand what they're going through.

This is a great song; I really like this song too. I have heard the radio version and can't get enough of it either; it's more upbeat but still speaks to me about the love of God and of the love we should have for one another. When we feel lost or all alone God is there, we just need to cry out to him. He will not let us down; I feel that Tiffany is singing about God's love expressed by caring Christians reaching out to those who feel lost or hopeless.

My father committed suicide and years later I felt myself in a similar place of sadness. I heard this song and felt like the Holy Spirit was singing this to me to keep me holding on. That was 2017. This is July 2023 and I’m here. Thank God for the hope he put in my heart thru his love for me. I was lost but he came to save me. Thank you Plumb for this song. It may have saved my life. I just kept listening to it and it spoke a ray of hope🙏❤️

I know nothing about singing. But I love her voice and the way she changes it. She grabs your attention.
