Drifting
Plumb & Dan Haseltine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a sea of lonely swimming sad
Looking just for an arm to grab
I don't need to understand
I'm just lending you the two that I have

[Chorus]
You might be drifting
And can't find the shore
So hopeless and all alone
The waves are crashing all around you
Just when you've lost the will to live
You see the sun

Can we make a searchlight
From all the bridges that we burn?
Do you see a rescue?
Or a deeper kind of hurt?

Who could love you,
Who could hold you?
I'd swim across the sea
You don't have to be alone
Where the shallow gets so deep

[Chorus]

I am hurt and nearly drown
(Open up your eyes)
I cry for help you turned around
(Open up your eyes)
Farther from the shore
Or you'll be farther from the shore

I am hurt and nearly drown
(You're not alone)
I cry for help you turned around
(I'm not letting go)
Farther from the shore
So you're not farther from the shore

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Plumb & Dan Haseltine's song "Drifting" tell a story of someone who feels lost and alone, drifting aimlessly through life. The opening line describes the many people who feel sad and alone, searching for someone or something to hold onto. The singer acknowledges their pain, offering their own arms as a source of comfort and support.

The chorus speaks to the desperation of feeling like there is no hope or direction. The imagery of crashing waves and being adrift at sea emphasizes the overwhelming nature of this feeling. However, just when things seem darkest, there is a glimmer of hope - represented by the sun. This hopeful image is a reminder that even in the midst of despair, there is always the possibility of finding one's way.

The second verse is a call to action, asking if we can use the bridges we've burned in our past to create a "searchlight" that might lead us to safety. It also poses a question about whether true rescue might involve recognizing and confronting deeper issues. The bridge offers reassurance that there is someone out there who cares and wants to help. The repeated refrain of "farther from the shore" underscores the urgency of the situation and the importance of finding a way back to safety.

Overall, "Drifting" is a song that speaks to the human experience of feeling lost and alone. It offers a message of hope and solidarity, reminding listeners that they are not truly alone and that there is always the possibility of finding a way back to a place of safety and peace.

This is a great song; I really like this song too. I have heard the radio version and can't get enough of it either; it's more upbeat but still speaks to me about the love of God and of the love we should have for one another. When we feel lost or all alone God is there, we just need to cry out to him. He will not let us down; I feel that Tiffany is singing about God's love expressed by caring Christians reaching out to those who feel lost or hopeless.

My father committed suicide and years later I felt myself in a similar place of sadness. I heard this song and felt like the Holy Spirit was singing this to me to keep me holding on. That was 2017. This is July 2023 and I’m here. Thank God for the hope he put in my heart thru his love for me. I was lost but he came to save me. Thank you Plumb for this song. It may have saved my life. I just kept listening to it and it spoke a ray of hope🙏❤️
