The band formed in 2006, and appeared on a compilation, The Kids At The Club, later that year. In April 2007, Pocketbooks played the first ever Indietracks event on a 1950s steam railway in Derbyshire. This show coincided with the release of the band's debut single, Cross The Line, on Atomic Beat Records. A year later, Pocketbooks released an EP Waking UP on Make Do And Mend Records.
The band's first album, Flight Paths, was released in July 2009 on How Does it Feel To be Loved?. The album contains the single Footsteps and the track Fleeting Moments, which appears on the Rough Trade Shops Indiepop '09 compilation.
The second Pocketbooks album, Carousel, was released in September 2011 on Odd Box Records, preceeded by the single Promises, Promises. The band were joined for the album recording by violin players from A Little Orchestra.
Pocketbooks have played live shows across the UK, Europe and the United States, including festival appearances at Offset, Indietracks and Rip It Up, and popfests in London, Edinburgh, New York and San Francisco.

Camera Angles
Pocketbooks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Drawings spread across the bed
Deciphering the day ahead and conversations
Sequences and camera angles
You're using charcoal and felt-tips
I'm posing mannequins to map it all out
The imaginary camera work
Where every road's a movie set
And every conversation has been pre-approved
And road-tested by focus groups
And here, back in real life at our desks
Still imagining we're filming on sets
Where the cameras film in single takes
So you pick out locations and directions for the cast
I'll be learning lines for all occasions that arise
We'll imagine clapperboards for every single scene in our day-to-day lives
And you'll find continuity from one clip to the next
I'll be free to improvise as long as it complies with an overall view
Where the cameras always follow you
And it's enchanting in a certain way
Every word is magnified
Every look considered
Yet we're bordering on obsession on directing
Alongside fictitious camera crews that film
Imaginary plots that never work through
When the cameras never follow you
So you could leave the stories and the dialogue to chance
I'll be free to improvise and take things as they come and
We'll keep up an open mind for every single scene in our day-to-day lives
And we'll find continuity from one day to the next
No-one needs a storyboard to tell us what we should have known all along
That the cameras follow everyone
The song "Camera Angles" by Pocketbooks describes the daily routine of the two protagonists who view the world as a movie set. They sketch a storyboard every night, which is a roadmap for the day ahead. They map out conversations, sequences, and camera angles as if they were on a film set. The imaginary camera work and clapperboards allow them to orchestrate their lives like a movie.
The song highlights the idea of living life as a movie, where every conversation, every look is considered as an essential part of the plot. The enthusiasm and obsession with directing are charming but bordering on obsession. The desire to control every aspect of their lives through the lens of a camera leads them to live in a world of imaginary plots that never come to fruition.
The song's underlying message is that a person's life is a movie, and everyone is the singer of their own story. There is continuity in every scene from one day to the next; there is no need for a storyboard to tell them what they should know intimately. The cameras will follow everyone, narrating their stories to the world.
