"Brotherly love yields strange fruit. My brother Jonno had been a sometimes-drummer for LEMONHEADS, and when I opted out of said outfit he (almost immediately) encouraged us to try our own thing. Which, with the help of Dave Richman, Joshua Pickering and Gary Vitagliano, we did.

The most illuminating history of PODS I'm aware of awaits you at beatplasma.net. (12/07: Or, ahem, at least it did at one point. Apparently not anymore. Cue the wikipedians.)

As you all know, *I* never remember anything unless it's written down and extensively photographed--and even then, it's pretty hit-or-miss. So I shan't attempt to recall anything but broad strokes. (This much trivia I do recall: the name originated as an acronym for "pardon our dust..." We also almost went with the name SNUFKIN -- a character from some Finnish books for children, don't ask -- or DUCK SEASON FIRE, a line from an old Warner Brothers cartoon.)

PODS was about the, er, creative tensions that come into play when you throw together one songwriter (me) chock full o' punk/new wave/hardcore influences, and another (Jonno) with, shall we say, a more classical and mainstream pop axe to grind. Grind we did, and I'm proud of the sparks that shot outta the whole thing.

Among the highlights I remember: getting the first EP serviced by ROCKPOOL; being played (more than once) by the legendary John Peel; repeated invitations to ramble and strum live on WBCN, WFNX, and a host of college stations; hanging on in the local PHOENIX top 10 for weeks, without any commercial support or distribution; and a farewell rave-up at Aerosmith's MAMA KIN on Landsdowne. Of course, I may have imagined all this. Whatever. Good times... "

I moved from Minnesota to Florida using two 16 foot PODS, and a 8 foot U-Haul that I towed behind one of my vehicles. We spent upwards of $6,000, and used the storage for two of the three months that were included. It was worth it overall, but I had a small number of damaged goods, probably due to my packing. My recommendation is to make sure you pack everything yourself, and fill the PODS with LOTS of protection and padding, because they PODS get HOT in transit, and they get jostled around a LOT. Place Damp-rid in each POD to absorb moisture, because even though the storage facility is climate controlled, the transit will expose it to lots of heat and humidity.

@Cat Bee Yes, after they picked them up from the house we sold they took the pods to a climate controlled facility near the city we were moving to. When we bought our house they brought the pods to the new home and we emptied them directly into our new house. It was a great system, as we could have stored the pods for as many months as we needed while we shopped for a home.

We had a very similar experience to yours. One thing my sister (a former truck loader for UPS) told us to do was to put casual clothes, area rugs and towels etc. in heavy-duty plastic trash bags and use them as stuffing around the edges of items. That helped prevent damage from items shifting in transit. PODS worked out so well for us that our kids are using them for their move here next month.

I call those bags "fill ins" and yes they do help tremendously with prevention damage. Almost a necessity if you want your stuff to be safe.

I am glad that PODS worked out so well for you, I was afraid this was going to be a "disaster story" type of review. I did a cross-country move from Kansas to Alaska in 1996 and drove a 24 foot U-Haul truck for four days to Bellingham, WA (sleeping in the truck cab) then 3 days on the Alaska Marine Lines ferry (sleeping in a lounge area). It was a difficult trip but no horror stories only a small amount of damage to my belongings. I don't know if PODS were an option then, but based upon this video, I would certainly consider it for any future long-distance move just for the convenience and peace of mind.

Be forewarned: The POD Moving Frame requires at least 13-ft clearance, not just the width of your driveway, but any roof overhangs, as well. So, if you have a detached garage toward the rear of your property and have a long driveway, ensure that you have 13-ft clearance, so that the Driving-frame can clear the POD (about 20 ft) and collapse itself.

I used 4 x 16 foot PODS for storage, moving and delivery during a housing move in 2018. The items moved via PODS was a large amount of audio - video gear, my record, video, CD and DVD collections, and my professional recording studio equipment and all the cabinetry. Everything that was breakable was loaded in the PODS for safe keeping with a multitude of travel blankets and heavy rope cabling to control movement. All the small items were packaged either in plastic totes or carefully sized moving boxes to maintain item security. I carefully loaded everything in the 4 PODS over a period of about three weeks and sent them off to storage while my house went up for staging and sale. Once the house sold and the new house was finished being built the PODS were delivered to my new house over a period of three months giving me time to unload and place items in the different locations within the new house which was smaller than my older location. In all nothing was broken or damaged during the PODS process except when a few plastic totes fell off a wheelbarrow while being moved from the front to rear of the house down some stairs. The totes were damaged but the content escaped unscathed. The money that was saved over the cost of a mover was surprising and I'd have no resistance to using PODS again with their professional attitude and talented pickup and delivery drivers. I was impressed with the local PODS personnel. The only real problem I had was with the online booking system that was having some issues at the time of delivery and pickups with the new address which were solved by obtaining the local number of the PODS office. The development where I moved was too new to show up on their computerized mapping system and wasn't accepted by the national online system. After I described my location to the local office they found a work around that allowed their driver to find my new house and deliver and pickup from my location. The national system wasn't able to rectify the problem during my usage window but the agents did the best they could to make adjustments so that the local office could make the deliveries and pickups at the new house. The mapping problem also effected delivery issues with major courier companies around the same time so it wasn't just a PODS issue.

We used pods last year moving from NY to OR. Was a great experience. It was cheaper then hiring a moving company which would be twice as much. Had to downsize as well. I recommend PODS.

I used a POD when my mom had mold in her apartment and the owner needed everything out to remedy the mold. It rained hard for two days and was pleased there were no leaks.

We just recently moved to the Tyler area, and so far we love that part of Texas. Regarding moving your household goods, there are many moving options to consider. Do some research! I would not say, “Do not use PODS for your move”, but I would definitely suggest looking at other options. Our move seemed to be going well until the POD was delivered and we noticed it was the wrong size. Things went downhill after that. I would be happy to let anybody know my honest feedback about the entire process, including my attempts to resolve grievances, either here or via FB DM.

@Sharon F. Baker same with me. I do not have a lot, but are things that that I do not want to get rid of. PODS is a sacrifice you have to pay. I used to move from ohio to texas; and now I will be using for return back to ohio… hopefully things go just as well. I inquired from my insurance agent, and was told my items will be covered under my renters insurance. I need to inquire, but it may only cover theft, and not damages.

I had a similar experience moving from SF Bay Area to LA. They actually "lost" my POD for 10days. That's just the start of my long story. I agree: I'm not going to say don't use them, but do your research. Honestly their drivers are AMAZING!!! It's the office/logistics people that I had more issues with than anything else.

Great video. I am planning a move from N Carolina back to Florida in the very near future. I had only used PODS locally, so it great to know there are long distance options. In my case, I will have to not only down size, but have to hire people to help me load the POD.
You gave me some relief to know that I could use this service for out of state moving.

Wow what a detailed and honest review! My company started using these to transport our equipment because it was much cheaper. However, we’ve had two delivered now and they both have had a really hard time getting the door open. A lot of our stuff shifted to the door so it was stuck and jammed. Any recommendations would be welcome. We’ve done too so far and it wasn’t so good.

We're getting ready to move. I checked several ways, including UHaul, PODS and several others. We sold most of our furniture to make the move easier, then I decided to just buy a cargo trailer, pack it as needed and sell it when we get where we're going. MUCH less than renting anything! Also UHaul boxes are the least expensive, but the handles are weak and tear out, so you'll need to reinforce them with tape.

I used it when I moved. Spent two weeks in the driveway, no issues, used my own lock. The Pod company stored it for a month until I was ready to move into my new house. About $120 storage fee, I think it came to $280 total, this was about 2012. I moved across town, delivery, pickup, delivery, no issues. Moved before so my items were stowed pretty well, no damage noted. Have and will continue to recommend them. I do remember they were nice and clear on all details, the delivery/pickup/delivery gents were fantastic.

In September 2021 I moved from Pasadena, California to New York City. I also had a great experience with PODS, including my driver also gave me a 30-minute call before he arrived. I kept my POD in their storage for two months while I lived in a hotel and searched for a NYC apartment, and paid a reasonable monthly-storage fee. Great service. I recommend them highly.

However, even though I love Pasadena, I am an old woman and always dreamed of living in NYC, so when I retired from my job, I came here. The high cost is worth it, for me, for my joy of being here. @加州小农 OI used only one smaller POD, as I gave away much of my furniture, so that might be why it costs you more. Yes, it might also be due to higher demand now. I keep hearing on the news that companies are having trouble hiring workers after the Covid-19 problems, so wages are increasing in order to attract workers - and gas prices are very very high right now, as I'm sure you know -- so maybe that is making it all way more expensive for you -- larger POD, higher wages, higher gas prices. When I moved, it was end of summer and many people were still afraid of moving due to Covid.

Great review. Have been considering PODS for when we move back home to TX from CA. We just need to decide which relatives we want to be closest to & have choices to move to suburbs of Austin, Houston, San Antonio or Dallas.

We just left cali for Wisconsin and it took 3 of the largest pods and cost around $15,000. It went mostly smoothly. Stuff shifted and we couldn’t get the door open on one(our fault just a warning). We played the game of cheaper to ship or replace on many items. Uhaul is cheaper to drive the truck back to California.

I have definitely looked into pods in the past but it hasn't worked out for us just yet. This time we did a 256ft penske truck. I recommend the company highly, but husband said he just didn't like driving our stuff himself, and worrying about truck breakins and stuff. Moving is just really stressful, period. All in all no damage either time we moved ourselves, but the stress simply isn't worth it when the military will take care of the rest of it if you let them. We weren't going to diy this time either but had no choice with short notice and lack of availability. Hopefully this won't be the case next time. 😬 if we have to diy again, now that we are getting good about savings, I hope both properties will work well with pods. It seems like it'd be easier than the truck or trailers or other options.

I now wish PODS could assist me with my move but the availability of them at the end of July 2021 is out until the end of August in the NE Philly area. I applaud you for owning the damage caused during transit. People do not understand that using MORE space than absolutely necessary will cause more damage by shifting. Enjoy SoCal. I'm a San Diego born and bred transplant. I miss the weather but not the cost and the amount of violence. Peace!

We are planning to move from RI to NH at the end of summer. WAs thinking of a U-Haul but after watching this will go with the Pods. Seems way easier and can take the time to pack things right. Was a little worried about my narrow driveway but looks like the drivers are good at what they do and should have no problems.

I used a Pods container about 25 years ago, and was pleased that nothing got damaged, even though I forgot to secure a very cool model of the c-57-D space cruiser, a 3ft wide model from Forbidden Planet. I just left it sitting on a table in the pods, and locked it up. LOL It survived the move, and it didn't even move one inch on that table! Thanks for sharing.

This was such an informative video! However, if I’m paying that much to transport my furniture, I’m making sure I take advantage of EVERY square inch in that thing. I’d take dissemble EVERYTHING and cram them into boxes (yup — even furniture), make everything stackable, and then leave nonvaluables that aren’t worth the space they’d be using in the pod (paper towels, plastics, old laundry)

You will run into weight limits weigh before you can get them stuffed that full, but I was amazed how much I was able to stuff in them. Definitely worth every penny!

Moving about the same mileage, rocking the small pod (unloading pretty much all the furniture, no need to haul it across country). Your video has been massively helpful, and thanks for the links to supplies that worked great for you (bought them also).

Thanks for all the tips. I will be moving next month and PODS seems to be the best in my particular situation as well. My only concern is that there doesn't seem to be a way to specify the exact time for the pod delivery - delivery is the same day the movers/helpers are coming and hopefully the pod arrives first.

Thanks Dude, informative video. I am moving 1,100 miles and this video helped me to understand how Pods work. Looks like it would be a good idea to schedule the pod move a week or so ahead of time for my destination before my settlement date as the Pod company might take up to a week to actually move the Pod to my destination.

I was wondering why there was a 370 mile difference in the bills. But then you said you moved to a different location than what they quoted you for. I got a quote from them for a move from CT. to SC. They wanted $3600. That's a bit much for a 750 mile trip. And they told me I had to use the largest container because they don't ship smaller containers that far. When the time comes to move, I'll do it myself in a rental truck. I don't have much to move anyway.

@Sheila G. so I got a quote from pods and sent it to 1800packrat and they matched it actually for even less money AND they are completely waterproof not just "weather resistant" and store their units in climate controlled environments. So if you're having any second thoughts maybe give them a call! They told me pods has hidden fees and taxes they add on at the end, idk how true that is but I got a little nervous about it

Thanks! This was PERFECT!! I'm planning a cross country move from Sacramento to Atlanta the first of the year and I've been looking at all types of ways to get my things there! I have a small studio apartment, so I don't have much furniture but I do have quite a bit of art and home decor. Most of it is packed already-so my biggest worry was how my studio pottery and art glass pieces would make this trip safely. Great video. How much time does PODS give you to unload the POD at your destination? Is there an extra fee if you have the POD longer than expected? Also, would it be wise to use plastic storage containers as opposed to cardboard boxes for packing? I'm planning a long-distance move and thinking about using a 7ft. POD.

You are charged a monthly rental fee. You will need to call them and let them know if you need to keep it longer. You can either reschedule a pick up at that time, or tell them you will recall them later when you are ready to schedule a pickup. I would recommend sticking with boxes for a few reasons. (1) You can get them for free if you have any business parks in your area and a recycling system, there is usually a separate "trash" container that is for recycled items, that is where you should be able to find plenty of boxes as long as you're willing to fish them out of the container which may require climbing into the container, but not always. (2) The boxes being of varying sizes and having straight sides allow you to pack them more tightly together, saving space and requiring less strapping. (3) If it is hot and you are moving a long distance there is a good chance of the plastic totes "melting" or deforming - I just recently moved across country and this was an issue I had, many of the plastic tubs I used are now semi squished and pretty much useless. So I am out the money I spent on them. Fortunately, the ones I bought, I got from a discount store (Big Lots) but they were still $8 a piece and about half are badly deformed and a few slightly deformed, the ones that were on top are pretty much still okay. This may or may not be an issue for you since you're only looking at the smaller container I'm guessing you're not moving much. Use your best judgement is all I can say from here.

Appreciate the review, with pricing, but it would have been really helpful if you had shown more of the loading process. what does the floor look like? How do you secure the items, so they don't go flying around? I've moved with PODs before, but we hired movers to help, and they pretty much told us to get out of the way, and they'd do it. They did, and it was great, but it would still be nice to see. Especially for do it yourself people, to know what's involved.

I am curious about what size is best. It is disappointing to hear that to move a distance, one must choose small or large. What is you feeling about the 12'? Wow! Thank you so much for such an informative review. My friend wants to move her furniture from Wisconsin to South Texas and I was telling her about PODS. We used PODS a few years ago but it was just a local move and storage for 2 months while our home was being built. We did not have any trouble. Definitely moving across the county is a complete difference experience.

FYI - I’m moving cross- country + just hired PODS. They are very easy to work with. Yes, a bit pricey but… you get to pack your own stuff + lock it up. They insure each pod w/$10k or more if you need it. Call them for a quote. They do need 2 weeks notice for drop + pick up. I liked the idea of transport b/c I don’t have a new address yet. They put the pod in their warehouse until I’m ready for the transit. Peace of mind for me. Hope this helps. 👍

I used Pods in Canada. After loading a 3 bedroom house into a Pod and giving them the address it was being moved to I was informed they didn't deliver there (a two hour drive away) I was told they could take the Pod back to there storage yard and I could take a week to empty it out. I ended up renting a uHaul truck for a week and moving everything in multiple loads. I advise anyone who asks not to use them.

I used PODS when I was remodeling a property for about 5 months. I loaded it and didn't see it until the remodel was done. The POD delivered to the finished property. I unloaded the pod. The POD was picked up. This is I'm doing it when I move CA to OR. It is easy and very reasonable 😎

You were very lucky. I used pods for an out-of-state move and they ruined everything I had! They overbooked their storage facility in the state I was moving to and pulled all the out-of-state pods and put them out in their parking lot, despite that their paperwork said they would store my pod inside their climate controlled facility. Apparently it rained so hard that it flooded the parking lot. The Pod is only waterproof from the top, not the bottom. So with a parking lot, according to them, with over a foot of water... the water went up inside all the pods in the parking lot from the bottom. That coupled with the heat from the Sun beating down on them made mold grow inside the Pod and all over everything I had. When they delivered the Pod to me nothing at all was said. I went to unlock it and my key didn't fit and then I noticed that the numbers on the Pod itself or different than the numbers on my receipt. I assumed they delivered someone else's pod to me by mistake. Nope. In an effort to dry my stuff out, they broke my lock took all my stuff out of the wet pod and put all my wet stuff inside another dry pod. That was their solution to this mess. So my stuff was all thrown in there and there was blue, green, black, and white fuzz all over everything. I didn't know mold came in that many colors. As soon as I lifted up the door to that pod the smell about knocked me out. It smelled like decomposition, a dead body. I will never forget that smell. Their customer service sucked and they were such sons of bitches that they could have cared less that they ruined everything I had including personal mementos and photo albums and such that are irreplaceable. All they wanted to know is did I need a claim form! After I painstakingly went through the process of inventorying absolutely everything which included having to describe each item each article of clothing and so forth and then give a price as to what I thought it was worth and they said they would pay one-third of that. After I did all that and touched all that nasty moldy stuff oh, they then said that they didn't owe me anything and that instead I had to pay them! I'm not kidding! They said I owe them because they delivered the Pod to my first location and they store the Pod despite that it was in their parking lot and not inside and they delivered the Pod to my second location and therefore I owed them and they couldn't help that it rained! I would never ever use this company ever.

@TailHappyTV no, and my homeowner's insurance didn't cover it because it was not in the home when it happened. I had to contact an attorney who explained to me that there is a federal law that protects them once they cross state lines. If it's an in-state move you can sue but if it's an out-of-state move this law protects them. The lawyer explained to me that they were just simply greedy and overbooked their facility and then pulled all the out-of-state pods, likely in alphabetical order by last name, and put them out in the parking lot. He said that pods would have absolutely known that they were going to get ruined and that it was a tax write-off for them. He also said that if I didn't pay them they could sue me! Because their contract stated what they were going to do, and breaching it was protected under the federal law, and there was nothing stating that the stuff would be undamaged or not moldy or anything like that.

i miss ATL, i lived there for about 3 years in my 20s before moving back to indy, i did that trip in a uhaul towing my car behind, and my goodness that drive was nerve racking! i just remember the uhaul dropping exponentially toward 0 mpg after going over 55 mph, never again.

Omg this video was sent from God! My husband and I are from Indianapolis ( we live in Mccordsville) and are in the works of a possible move to Phoenix Arizona... Our home is 3300 sq ft and cost for homes in arizona are quite a bit more for equal and even way less sq footage. We are having the same experience trying to move from central CA back home to central TX. An equivalent house in TX is going to be at least 200K or more & property taxes will triple what we're paying here in CA. The TX real estate markets are absolutely nuts & you have to be a millionaire now to buy a decent property there like what you're moving from.

So far so good. They are expensive but they were cheaper then a u haul. We just got out here. Didnt stop much as my husband started his job sooner then we thought, so the pod is still on its way. We were able to fit eveything in it, and just scheduled the drop off day. The only problem we had so far was the key to the lock they gave us snapped off. So we had to dremel it off and used one of our locks. :) i can update on monday after we unload. I hope we packed it tight enough so stuff didn't move around!

Thank you for posting this. I haul pods long haul and almost never get to meet any customers. Most of us try really hard to creep around sharp curves and such to avoid any damages, so it's nice to hear 99% of your stuff arrived unharmed. The OTR drivers all love what we do. It's nice to hear you had a good experience with such a long move.

@TailHappyTV lol, I hate smart cars! Sometimes they mess up and slam on the brakes for what I can only surmise is ghosts on the highway. We have more advanced tech in the trucks, and sadly, it has a way to go. They're building a hyper loop in my state though, and that is baaaad! 600 mph! I can't wait.

People just don't understand transport. They think setting the emergency the brake is "properly securing a load." It is not. 🤣 They pretty much go flying.

@TailHappyTV it is such a neat job :) It always miffs me a little when people get right on my tail when I'm going slow. They just don't get it that I am hauling someone's stuff around the country! Moving is stressful enough without your stuff getting demolished! For anyone who is checking out these comments, I can't speak for much for how local deliveries work. I do kniw that LA is always a nightmare traffic wise, lol. But, I can say that in addition to the locks, we load the doors facing each other and facing inward on our trailers, so it is next to impossible for anyone to break in. If you move in the winter, please be patient, especially if you're moving to the Pacific Northwest. On the rare occasions we don't drive our legal amount of hours (11 a day), it is usually because we were shut down due to wind or ice. Also, please don't put smart cars in the pods ... it doesn't usually turn out well 🤣😲

I got a 16 footer and changed dates for pick up and deliver (with no problems), and delivered to a relative's home.
I weighed EVERYTHING because they list a max weight of 4,200lbs and I'm guessing there are cost increases for overweight.
The cost was close to $8K, and they made it clear that reserving in advance was a must as I was leaving California.
I tied and strapped heavy items and divided the pod into 4 sections with plywood to prevent shifting as well as using bungy netting to cradle a kayak.
The driver that delivered the pod to my relatives was impressed when they opened it (nothing moved).
I also used a GPS tracker from Amazon to track the pod while it traveled, and added my own lock to the one they sold me for $13.

@David Rockwell I imagine the cost from California was a bit higher due to the cost of shipping empty containers back into the state for use (unless the containers are brand new and just arrived from China, for instance).
I didn't quite move from one coast to the other, but it was close.
And the container went to Atlanta before moving to it's delivery address.

I’m planning to move from Oklahoma to Florida after my fiancé retires next year. Thanks for the video... It helps answer a lot of questions that I didn’t want to wait in que fir 30 minutes on the PODS phone line for.
I wonder if you can answer a question for me tho - Can we access the PODS unit while it’s in storage if we pack some necessities near the door for easy access? We need to shop for a house when we arrive in Florida but may be in a furnished apartment or hotel for a few weeks or months while we look for a house. I've made several cross country moves and I've found it can be easier to just mail things.

Pro nerd tip, get rid of your computer case ! Shipping a whole computer is a great way to break it! Plus it's pretty fun to reassemble your PC!

I don't have any furniture worth keeping though. I'd suggest younger adults to always go cheap on furniture, and TVs. It's so easy to buy new stuff later and it's much much less stressful!

I have used Pods 3 times in my life, I can't say anything bad about them, the Drivers are always friendly and respectful, if anything got broken in the POD it's on the individual for not packing it correctly. I would recommend Pod's for anyone that wants a cheaper way to move. Some moving company's can't be trusted to have things stolen or broken and their over priced.

Thanks for the video. We plan to be going in the opposite direction in October. Our quote for one large pod was closer to $6000 for 2400 miles. I wonder if they are charging more for west-to-east like Uhaul? How many ratchet straps did you need?

@TailHappyTV Yes one 16 foot POD I think that was for delivery, shipping and 3 months of storage. The biggest difference was 4500 for shipping.

Check the link I posted to the straps, I think we used 6 straps but probably could have benefited from a few more.

Definitely needed to see this for r assurance. We have a pod coming next week and hoping that 16 foot would do. I believe it will. Thanks. We aren't traveling as far lol

Do you remember where you placed your tv in the tv box? At the edge of the pod or in the center, was it surrounded by boxes or furniture? We're going back and forth about if we want to put ours in a pod or have it take up the entire back of our SUV but your experience has me feeling more confident in the pod

We wedged it between the headboard (that was ratchet strapped to the wall) and a stack of furniture. I didnt have high hopes for the tv making it undamaged, but I was really impressed with how little shifting occurred in the cross country transport. Hope this helps!
